I am going to pick up a beretta 92FS INOX next week. I will also get a case, cleaning kit and some ear protection. I am assuming any safety glasses will be fine for the range? I have a gun safe and I am going to get some training/lessons. Also the idea of a lazer sight really interests me but I don't know anything about them Anything else to consider?

Ammo, of course!! And, a few spare magazines.

Actually, if you plan to carry this gun...start looking for a good holster. There's a lot of holsters available...but you need to find one that works for you. Personally, I prefer leather...but good ones are pricey. A lot of guys prefer materials other then leather (such as Kydex).

Good luck, read the manual and be safe!!!

Have you given any thought to carrying?
If so then holsters will be your next buy. There are some good pancake style ones out there. You might want to try a model that allows for left and right also inside and out side of the waist band.
To get good with it maybe check with the local range about IPSC and reloading.
I have been useing the model 92s since the mid 70's and love it. Accurate, dependable comes back naturally after each shot and eats up all and any forms of ammo without jamming.

Roy pretty well covered it. On Ammo, be aware there are many types and they all have a purpose, depending on what you want the pistol to do. For practice and "plinking" just the Full Metal Jacketed ball type of ammo will be just fine like Winchester white box or Remington yellow box or Federal red box stuff. This will be your most economical loads to get the gun broken in, (200 rnds min) and some trigger time for you. But they are not good for carry ammo to defend you life with. I don't know how much of these topics you know already, so if you need help, come back with more questions.:)

I don't know your motivation for taking this step but I assume it is primarily for personal protection in this crazy world. Training and practice are important! Get real comfortable with your new weapon and know how to tear it down and put it back together. There are some great training opportunities out there and if you are like me and others that I have spoken with, you don't know what you don't know until you get exposed to it!

Owning a gun does not prepare you for a gunfight any more than owning a piano makes you a musician!

Oh, as for the laser, my suggestions would be to learn to use the sights first, and add the laser later if you desire, They have their place, but I think learning fundamentals first is the way to go..Again I am assuming some things here, by your byline about the first handgun. Happy handguning:thumbsup:

I dont think I will carry the gun besides shooting on my buddies property. As far as home defense, I have a 12g pump shotgun that I would go to first. I would have to be real comfy with a 9mm to pick it over the shotgun. I do need a new gun safe as I bought the $299 model from TSC. I never thought about the combination lock and I would not want to mess with it in a stressful situation. First time I can remember going cheap and I got bitten! I am only going to target shoot with this gun initially.

That is a nice gun, wouldn't be my first choice for concealed carry, but a great heavy duty work horse.

If you plan on carrying it after dark or in dark places, you need a high quality flashlight to go with it.

One suggestion

An amazing light for a great price. I see they are back ordered now due to their popularity and value. This model just came out, they should restock it soon. 4 sevens has alot of other choices though.

EDIT: I see you don't plan to carry it, but the light is still a necessity at home.

Ok cool, yep 12 gauge is hard to beat to keep the "wolf" from the door. Now if you want to get better with a handgun, the best way I know to get really better is to compete with others. As in IPSC or IDPA type of competition. There is a big difference in just flinging rounds downrange with friends and competing and learning from others that are really better than you, and many who are pro's. When the buzzer sounds and it is all up to you to solve the problem, then is when you will know just how good you are, and what you need to learn to become better. Shooting 1000 rounds casually, may or may not improve your skills much, but I guarantee if you shoot 1000 rounds in competition you will be a better shooter. Just a little sage advice from on old (worn out) IPSC shooter:laughing:

You need a holster especially if you are shooting on someone's land. The best place for the pistol is in a holster which is on your person. Some ranges might not allow you to carry in a holster and just leave the hand gun on the bench. Tis better to put the handgun in the holster when between firing sessions.
