Deer and mole repeller

We use the Irish Spring in stockings and it seems to work for the deer. We have many thousands of deer all aorund the area we live. There are fields close by where there are large herds that graze all winter. The Cats and Dogs seem to deal with the ground dwelling critters which for us are pocket gophers.

I tried about everything to keep the deer out of my corn patches, human hair, Dial soap hung in bags throughout the patches, human urine, nothing worked until I sat up a radio that was tuned to a round the clock religious station that broadcast sermons and religious music, believe it or not that keep the deer out but not the coons.

Now that the ground has thawed and the flowers are just starting to bloom, I have noticed two things. First, the deer are eating the new flower growth right down to the bulb. Second, I see little tunnel like depressions in one part of my yard. I like having the deer around, I just don't want them eating my plants. The little moles I could take or leave. How do I go about keeping the deer from eating my plants, trees, etc. How do I get rid of moles?

We learned to plant varieties of shrubs and flowers that are not attractive to deer, that keeps the damage down.

As for moles, I've use a spray product that worked very well, it was a spray that hooked up to the end of our garden hose and it mixed and sprayed with the water flow. I think it killed the types of bugs that the moles feed on and consequently the moles had no food source so they moved on to other places (like the woods or the neighbors?).

I've not figured out how to keep the deer out of the garden. I've planted 2 mini-orchards (about 20 trees each time) and both had the trees literally eaten down to the stumps during bad winters despite my best efforts to fence the trees, and otherwise protect them. Apparently my best efforts at outwitting our overpopulated deer herds just plain old suck! :(

My moles don't leave the little mounds. It started when I saw a few holes next to the pad my AC sits on. It is actually a 6' pillar underground with a pad poured on top. They started their condo under and around that. Now, I see little depressions spreading off from that where they have made their tunnels. My worry is that they will kill the grass roots. I will try shoving some moth balls down the holes.

I like the soap idea. I'am thinking about shaving off some slivers here and their. Doesn't seem like the soap should hurt the plants.

Moles don't eat plants. They eat meat. Worm meat, bug meat, etc... If anything, they will aerate your lawn and make it healthier, except for the unsightly mounds and tunnels. Do a search on TBN for moles and you will find some good posts. Having dispatched over 150 moles in three years, I can tell you, trapping them or killing all the meat that they eat that lives under your lawn are the only effective ways to get rid of them.

Go to Moleman and learn more than you ever wanted to know about moles. ;)

OK, so far we have this:

Deer
- store bought repellent
- hair balls in stockings (that is wierd)
- cleaner in a bottle

Moles
- moth balls (dropped into the hole)
- caster oil (poured right on the ground where their tunnels are I am assuming)
- wood ashes (assuming also spread on the ground above their tunnels)

Looking forward to trying some of these out. PBinWA, I would like to shoot a couple of them. I love deer chili.:D, however I live to close to the neighbors. Keep the suggestions coming if their are more (or more bizarre).

Best place to get human hair is from your local barber. Put it in old panty hose and hang it around. It will need to be "refreshed" every 2-3 weeks depending on rain. Also, mixing some cayenne pepper with soap and water and then spraying on vegetation will keep them from eating it. The soap just makes it stick to the leaves. Another thing that works real well for gophers is used kitty litter. Dump some into fresh holes and pretty soon, they are gone. If you want to kill them, use poison peanuts, or some put a hose on their exhaust and run the hose into the hole and let it idle for an hour. Dead gophers.

I had the same problem and bought Critter Ridder at Home Depot.
It was very cheap, worked great, and one treatment lasts 30 days.
A can of the stuff was about 10 bucks, and that'll do all my plants and bulbs for the entire season.
