Jag,

On a lighter note, sounds like you need Hank the Cowdog and his faithful sidekick Drover to protect your place./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif In all seriousness, my daughter absolutely loves the series of books (4th-5th grade level) written by John Erickson (sp?), a 'real-life cowboy from the Texas panhandle'. EVERYONE who lives in the country and has a dog or dogs would enjoy reading them. I'm not embarrassed to admit that I have read them all. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Just trying to bring something positive to a depressing situation.

Jag, good advice! I've added that call to my list of things to do. Figure if push came to shove, it would not hurt that I reported a problem. Thanks.

ERINIEB,
This happens anywhere people don't take care of their animals. I would do the same thing you did. Another great killer of wild animals is cats. I think they should follow the same guidelines as dogs. They don't enforce leash laws on cats or really much of anything. They kill lots of birds and small game. It drives me crazy when I see a cats crossing the road with a dead baby grouse or woodcock in their mouth. I've been known to even the score. You need to make sure that it is done discreetly. Animal owners will press charges and in some states there can be a big fine.Be Careful

Fishman, I have read all of them. My son was in grade school when them started to come. We would read one or two chapters each night be for he went to bed. Hank the cowdog is cool...... I even have a couple of signed copies when I met the author..

Uncontrolled / unrestrained / untrained / or wild dogs are a problem. Sometimes the animal control people can effectively deal with a situation, sometimes they can't or won't. I'm a firm believer in the shoot, shovel and shut-up philosophy when the animal control people can't or won't deal with a situation that needs to be dealt with. For anyone who's interested, the nipple from a playtex baby bottle, cut off at the base and then slipped over the end of the barrel, makes an excellant silencer for a .22 and can withstand 2-3 shots before disintegrating.

Hey Bob,

Just noticed you were born a small child /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif , Pretty unique!....did everyone make fun of you because of it? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

But what got my attention was the 60 attachments you have for your tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Didn't even know they MADE that many!!
I'd like to see that list someday when you've got nothing to do (not likely, with all those pieces of equipment /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif !

Thanks for the laugh /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif ,

Well, I've got another twist on the dog thread. This last weekend, the son of my guests came to the house with his dog (unknown to me) and proceeds to let the dog out to run. I ran up and told him that if he wants to let his dog out, my dog has got to be put into the house or with me on a leash as she is an Alpha female who doe not like other dogs on "her" property and she will attack. (Ebony does not leave the property, and I only let her out when I am out with her.) I went into the house and put a leash on my dog and walked her out to the road so as to get away from the other dog. He and his parents left for the day, but when they returned, what does he do but immediately let his dog out and proceed to walk into the house with the dog! My dog was in the yard when they pulled up, and it seemed to be going ok, but another dog going into "her" house was too much for her and she attacked. We separated the 2 dogs immediately and he put his dog into his vehicle. The son was sheepish and mentioned that "I was warned....." He checked on the dog a few minutes later and noticed a gash in the dogs neck. He was not too concerned and said he'd take the dog to the vet tomorrow. I went out to assess the situation and there was a skin tear a little over an inch long. I told him he should get to the vet and have it stitched up that night. I even offered to pay the vet bills, but he again said "I was warned, you don't need to do that".

The next morning he came out to get his parents again, obviously very upset, and told me that the dog was in "bad" shape, that there was a 4" gash (how does a 4" gash require only 6 stitches) and that I should warn people. What part of "don't let your dog out....etc" is not a warning?????? I'm also mystified as to how he thought bringing his dog into my home, uninvited, was acceptable.

Have any of you run into anything similar?

Pat,

You did EVERYTHING you could AND MORE. They were warned, several times, you advised them to seek attention right away, they chose not to. There was nothing else (short of shooting their dog) you could have done!

We had 'associates' who brought their dog to our house for a social visit. We offered to put their dog in one of the kennels (out back) , or else thay could keep it tied. I warned that we have neighbors who have chickens and livestock and would shoot dogs that were running loose. The put the dog in the kennel and that was that.

Pat,

Maybe a hearing aid is in order for your guest. I know from your past posts that you are an animal person and I am sure it was up setting to see any animal get hurt when it didn't have to happen. I would be the same way. Seems to me you did all you could do, don't beat yourself up over it.
