Deer on the move.

Spring is here and in the late afternoons I've been seeing quite a few deer that have made it through the winter. This evening with a storm coming in we counted over fifty deer in an eighteen mile drive into town. One bunch was twenty five all coming out from a winter yard area and into fields that had some bare spots. Others were in groups of ten to twelve just a couple of miles down the road. The last time I saw that many deer in a single evening was way back in the early seventies. This fall's hunting season should be very good.

For sure. If you go over to the auto auction on Rte. 4 in Hartford those fields behind it should look like a herd of skinny jersey heifers have been turned out. Raining today so not so much but the next sunny late afternoon.

Now that the snows hard and not too deep, I had 4 in the back yard on Palm Sunday. They all look like they did very well over the winter. Still no idea where they yarded up, but can't be too far away.

Every other year we have several fields of soybeans around us. During the dog days of summer, some evenings the dragon flies are in large thick swarms similar to honey bees.
