Is it just winter coat missing and the patches are new summer coat? - a little rusty colored could be normal.

The second pic shows those patches down the top of neck to shoulders, which is where it would rub as a deer went through brush and trees.

that's what I thought too, but the pair there (and 1 other) are the only ones that visit my bait sites that show any markings like that, and they have progressively got worse since march or so ... the rest that come through don't show anything at all (have completely gone tan from the greyish colour)

Could they have been somewhere that was a really tough winter for them? It takes nutrition and energy to replace fur. Maybe they were really weakened and that delayed their coats. Other than that, I have no idea.

could have been ... we didn't get too much snow this year, but it was fairly dense with the wetness of it all

will keep an eye on them for a couple months and if they get worse ill get the diesel out
