Deere 1050 Sluggish Hydraulics - Workarounds

Greetings again folks,

Many folks, myself included, have experience sluggish hydraulics on our pre -11000 Deere 1050's.

I found an interesting thread here from a gentlemen with a similar issue; his solution, based on feedback from the dealer, was to replace the filter with a piece of 7/8" ID hydraulic hose. I emailed him, and he's been running this way for 4 months now without a problem.

I was wondering if anyone has experience actually replacing the entire filter assembly on the older tractors with the assembly from a 11000+ tractor. That is, remove the hydraulic filter assembly and replace it with CH19224 (Filter Block, complete)... This about $200 in parts (new from JDParts), unless I can find someone parting out an 11000+ tractor willing to sell it for less.

The filter on the 11000+ tractors is significantly larger so my guess is it would solve some of the sluggishness while still offering the protection of a filter, compared to running without one.

I've already upgraded my pump to the newer, high-capacity pump which has also helped, but I still find the hydraulics not as responsive as I would like.

Did you replace the 7.5 gpm pump with a 9.0 gpm pump? I ask that because I see the 1070 pump is a 9.0 gpm, might check to see if the 1070 filter assembly will cross over.

Have you checked to see if the screen in the sump is clean?

yeah, the screen is clean, I had the hydraulics serviced last year. I've already upgraded to CH13990, the higher-capacity pump as well. This is a notorious problem for this model tractor, I was curious if anyone had retrofitted the larger filter assembly onto an older model like mine. While removing the filter assembly is an option (person who did it reports dramatically improved performance) I worry about the lack of a filter and its affect on pump life.

The screen is fine for what it does but I would want a filter on my pump. Any issues with the transmission could send trash thru the screen to the pump.

I guess that's basically what I'm asking. The 1050 11000+ S/N filter assembly is the same as the filter assembly on a 1070 (CH13990)

I think the dealer that stated to remove hyd filter and replace it with a hose needs to have a chat with JD's area service manager if JD still has area service managers. I would never advise to bypass any type of filter. I would think if larger,later hyd filter would fit earlier 1050(- SN 011000) that said filter would be listed in the early model parts catalog.

Its my understanding the 850 and 950 did not have the hydraulic filter, unless the power steering option was present. It was installed on the 1050 standard even if you don't have power steering. The pre 11000 1050's use a Fram PH8A oil filter for the hydraulics.

If I can find someone parting out a newer 1050 I may buy a used assembly and see if I can retrofit it. Not sure I want to drop $200 on a new assembly from JD not knowing if it will work.
