I have a JD 1508 batwing mower of unknown age that I bought used.

One of the shafts to the wing has broken at the connector to the clutch on the gearbox on the 'wing'.

I have posted some larger photos here:

jhdpetro.com/deere.html

and here they are as well. This is the intact shaft on the other side:

This is the broken shaft in the bed of a truck. The entire shaft is bent and the part that connects onto the clutch is broken:

John Deere wants $595 for the entire assembly and that is over my budget as the intact side is not looking so good and may need replacement soon.

I need suggestions as to which parts I can buy elsewhere or fabricate or ideas on the best plan to repair this mower as things are starting to grow!

Thanks for reading.

A bit confused with your pics. The first is a Deere shaft and mounted on the wing. Is it broken?

The second pic is a non-Deere shaft that appears to be twisted, and broken joint, and the outside tube crushed from wrong top link setting when connected to the tractor PTO (btdt).

Which of the two (or both ) are you needing to replace/repair?

looks to me you just need a new pto shaft and a new universal joint, you could go to tsc, or any color tractor dealer to get something matched up. that does not hafta come from a green dealer. those are pretty much universal parts, like spark plugs. you might need to buy an aftermarket pto shaft that is longer and cut it down. but that is easy. the u joint will need a few curse words and maybe a BFH to get it changed. and would save you 300 to 400 dollars over the oem part

forgot to mention get the measurements off the broken u joint, better yet take it with you, that has to match size wise

I can't tell from the picture what is broken, but I gather it is the yoke that's on the mounting plate (I believe it's called a companion flange yoke)? If so that may be hard to find. I looked in my Baum Hydraulics catalog that has lots of driveline parts (everything you would need to build the rest of the driveline) but they don't show that part. One could be made from a piece of plate and a new yoke. You would need to get it centered good. That plate may have a rabbit fit machined on it. Would be a simple job for a machinist (which I am). Looks like the tube got dented when the yoke broke? Going to need to replace that too. Once again it needs to be straight as you can get it and the yokes need to be in line (In phase) with each other. The twisted square shaft can probably still be used as long as it slides OK and isn't bent.

To clarify things, the first photo is the intact shaft on one wing. The second photo is the broken one from the other wing.

Thanks for the replies. I familiarized myself with the parts today at TSC. The entire assembly, from drive side to clutch, it consists of:

  • * U joint with spline connection (called 'yoke'?) - OK
    * U joint cross piece - seems OK
    * Yoke welded to solid, square shaft - bent, twisted
    * Sleeve for square shaft welded to yoke - sleeve has a dent in it and is slightly bent. I think I can bend it back in a hydraulic pipe bender. When I put a new square shaft into it, the shaft will go past the dent and almost all the way in. I think it is only being stopped by the curvature of the sleeve and not the dent. Should I replace?
    * U joint cross piece - destroyed
    * Yoke attached to round flat plate - goes on clutch - broken

I can get everything at TSC except for the sleeve. I can find a yoke / solid shaft that is too long but otherwise identical. They have a sleeve / yoke assembly with the correct yokes but it is too long. I found the cross pieces as well.

So, I can buy the clutch plate / yoke part from JD, buy the yoke / shaft and cut off to correct length. But I will either have to bend the old tube assembly or find someone who sells the correct length yoke / tube / shaft assembly. TSC only has a 35.75" one. Mine is more like 20"

Two questions -

Where can I buy yoke / tube / shaft assemblies of other lengths? Online site?

How are yoke / cross piece (u-joint) dimensions specified? That is, what do I measure on my yoke that defines the size for replacement of either the yoke or the cross piece?

Once again I thank you for your responses. I am learning this stuff and just now understanding what I need.

I googled

tractor pto shaft parts

and got this links

PTO Shafts

PTO Shaft

The universals are generic nothing special a good machine shop should be able to fix it or just replace the tube

check TSC for the parts take the broken yoke with you

Baum Hydraulics Corp sells online. Yokes are measured by the bearing cup diameter, the outside width across the ears of the yoke, and the inside width between the ears of the yoke. I have found not all of their prices are accurate on line so a phone call on a questionable price might be needed. They are out of Omaha and I have done business with them for 20+ years. 1-800-228-9222 or 1-800-228-9288. If nothing else, get one of their catalogs. It's full of all kinds of hydraulic, driveline, bearings, seals, chain and sprocket, hardware, plus lots of useful information.
