I have a 1982 JD 2240 MFWD with 48 loader that cold or warm the hydraulics (power steering, loader,or 3 pt) don't work under 1500 rpm. The transmission filter warning light comes on under 1000 rpm. Steps taken to fix
1.) changed hydraulic oil and filter
2.) cleaned sump screen, did find a dense "mud" like substance but cleaning didn't change problem
3.) checked diverter valve, looked and worked normally
4.) checked screen on intake of hydraulic pump in front of engine, nothing found.
Other symptoms
1.) leaking hydraulic fluid at base of steering housing.
2.) excessive heat from steering housing with a lot of use.

Any thoughts or input appreciated

What are you calling a diverter valve??????? What type valve controls FEL (scv or ind.)? Does tractor have option of hyd ind pto or hyd hi-lo or hyd reverser? Have you checked hyd filter relief valve to be sure it's operable? Check hyd components for excessive heat with a laser thermometer. With 3 pt raised, hyd oil at operating temp, engine running look in hyd filler hole for spraying oil.

Check the driveshaft coupler for the pump coming off the front of the engine crank. Make sure the bushings aren't worn out. Also, on top of those pumps there is a little screw that can be turned in to release the pump pressure for easier starting in cold weather. Make sure that it is not screwed in any, it should be screwed out all the way. It was possible to buy a kit to replace those screw with a solenoid operated pressure relief that could be wired into the starting circuit so that it did it automatically upon trying to start. If this tractor has one of those kits, make sure it still works properly.

I fixed the problem. After talking with a JD mechanic I took the cap off where you fill the hydraulic oil. With a flashlight I could see a fog of hydraulic oil indicating a high pressure leak. I took the rockshaft off and put new o rings in the two spool valves and put a new ring kit on piston. Works like new now. Note, be careful putting rockshaft housing on, if done incorrectly you can bind lift linkage. Did it.

Thanks for the update. JD utility tractors have a long history of RS(3 pt) control valves leaking after many hrs of use.
