I just purchased a John Deere 5105. The previous owner changed the fuel filter and the primer. Got it started and delivered to me. It appeared to run just fine, but as I have used it a bit, I feel like it is starving for fuel. It will not rev freely, anything over 1500 to 1800 RPM feels like it is hitting a rev limiter. The previous owner had found gunk build up in the primer bowl. I am wondering if the tank needs to be drained. I am guessing that whatever caused the gunk build up in the primer bowl still exist in the system between the tank and the primer bowl. Does anyone have an outline of how the fuel flows from the tank to the filter? Are there any other screens or filters that need to be changed?

Thanks

:welcome: to TBN

Think your "guessing" would be correct..
You can go to John Deere Parts Catalog and put in the model 5105 and see all the parts connected to the fuel system starting at the tank.
Give it a shot, and you will be happy with the results.

A strainer on the outlet side of the fuel tank will be shown and the part numbers of each.
Also suggest draining the fuel tank and prepare a way to clean and flush it out.

Check back when you get the system cleaned out and hope then that you are operating smoothly with the JD 5105

Consider the temperature. Low temps may be causing fuel gels to be blocking the supply

If it won't rev out see if it is being choked by a mouse nest in the air filter assy.

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

If there was 'gunk' in the primer bowl, then there's likely 'gunk' residue throughout the fuel system. A look-see with an inspection camera down into your fuel tank can confirm this. Either way, I'd add a course of diesel 'biocide' to your fuel... something that breaks-down any biological growth into particulate size.

Enjoy the site.

I recommend changing this fuel filter(key 29) if you haven't recently changed it & check for good fuel flow from tank.

Question:
Is this the 45hp 5105, or the 105hp 5105M? Those are two VERY different animals. IF, it is the 5105M, your engine does have a rev limiter when the PTO lever is in the 540E position. It won't go over 1800 rpm.
