John Deere 755 Compact Tractor
I have a John Deere 755 compact tractor. Just recently oil started streaming down the steering column originating from underneath the steering wheel. I was pretty surprised and wondered what the oil was doing all the way up under the steering wheel. The 755 is a hydrostatic tractor and the oil I am seeing is obviously from the hydraulic system. Has anyone heard of this problem? Is it a simple O ring below the steering wheel that needs to be replaced, or am I going to have to disassemble down to the power steering control valve? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Arix

Welcome to TBN:D

There is a steering (orbital) valve not far below the steering wheel. You will have to determine where the leak is coming from. If your lucky, it's just a hose...

Do I start from the steering wheel and work my way down? I removed the nut holding the steering wheel on, but haven't been able to get the steering wheel off yet. I applied some penetrating oil and am going to invest in a gear pull. The leaking hose that you are referring to, would that be something that is inside the steering column?

Sounds to me like the steering valve input shaft seal is leaking. Oil is traveling up through the outer tube of the steering column and exiting around the bushing at the top of the tube (just below the steering wheel).

what he said.
to fix it you have to pull the valve, partially disassemble it and replace the seal.

There is a detailed procedure in the tech manual on the steering valve. Here is a pic of the valve with it's many layers and parts. Several warning procedures to follow to avoid damage and to get it all back together. I'd advise getting the manual if thinking of tearing into the valve.
One initial warning was to not hammer/pound on the steering wheel nut to remove the steering wheel. Apparently can damage the valve below.
Here is a drawing of the valve.

Hi Gents I am new on this forum I know that this is old thread but maybe. Some time ago I have bought JD755 in critical condition... Well whole body got rusty it's gone and other parts are in the box :). I am trying to assemble steering valve at the moment... I've found a way to put it back together but got a leak from the top of valve (shaft end) by my thoughts there should be some oring or other seal which is not there. Does anyone has service or shop manual for 755? I went thru few pics which I found on the web but cant find proper position for commutator and so on. Other rather stupid question I am simply wondering there is one plate with lets call it star shaped hole thru. One of small shafts going there anyway the way how it is build ... If I put these together that shaft wont turn well will but slightly only, so as it is connected with main steering shaft how the **** steering wheel can be turned :) ??? Or is it steering wheel turning only slightly on hydraulic steering. That will be quite surprise for me :) Just a simple thought... Anyway 755 workshop manual is needed and any help appriciate. My email is dokk.transiq@gmail.com
