Mike/Bird,

Thank you for your thoughts and concerns. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird,

The long distance portion of the company is what it is know for not what it's major business is anymore. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Somewhere between 65-70% of US Internet traffic is carried over WorldCom backbone circuits. Over 50% of the WORLDs email goes over WorldCom circuits. WorldCom bought out UUNET a couple three years ago and got that little gem. That is the unit I worked for. I have been seeing lots of very intelligent, capable people get laid of in the past year or so. These are the engineers and technicians who got the whole mess rolling. UUNET was an innovative company that always tried to keep the Internet backbone growing. Bigger, better, and faster. That's entreprunerial spirit has been broken.

No sour grapes... just sitting here shaking my head.... /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

Terry, I was really glad when Friday was over, but they still left me in limbo. as of 9 pm friday they still do not know where I am going. My Vp is planning to send me to Cary N.C. for a year, my Director wants me in Englewood C.O. for a year and local management wants me to come back across the hall permanently. This has been a fight for 3 weeks now and really makes you wonder if it is worth it.

Anyway I plan on getting myself together, packing the motorhome and cut way back on the expenses. I figure if they move me to either location it will cost me a lot more than they will compensate me(7-8 percent).

Right now it may be the right decision due to the Tulsa job market. Companies have dropped their salary rates by 45-50 percent since williams communication , worldcom, and Vitas have been flooding the unemployment rate. I have friends that have been going to interviews that lasted 3 - 4.5 hours for a $10 an hour communication job. I pretty sure that I could do better than $10 an hour going back to pulling cables. I fear that these companies will only hurt themselves because the people they are hiring know that they are being screwed and will leave the first chance they get.

Anyway I have to get back out to the shop and get busy on the motorhome, Take care and keep us posted on the results of the job search.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. Not good for anyone. Keep your heads up and your pride and all will come out good in the end. Remember everything happens for a reason. Just hard to figure out what that reason might be at the time.

Good luck and my prayers go out to all of you

All this is familiar to me. I got laid off last October from a Territory Sales Manager job that I had been doing for 10 years since I retired from the Army. But at least I have my Army retirement check to fall back on.

I decided not to move even tho I have had job offers in Kansas City and the job market here is in the toilet. I just don't want to live in the city again no matter what happens. I have done a couple of short term contract jobs since then but I'm back to sitting around collecting unemployment right now.

All -

Thanks for your encouraging thoughts, they are appreciated!! /w3tcompact/icons/king.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Commentary on Bob's response about his situation.

Bob is highlighting one of WorldCom's biggest problems - management. The man is getting three signals and no resolution. I does not even appear that they have asked for his input. Business is business - but people make the business a success!!

Bob - take it in stride. Do what you need to do and it will all work out.

Take care.

Ewoss3 and TerryMD,

REAL sorry to hear about your job situations. Its been
H..l around here lately. Here being the Triangle of NC.
Something like 6,000 IT jobs have vanished. That does
not include the WorldCom meltdown either. There is a
building behind mine that is/was all WorldCom/MCI and
they lost a few hundred people I think. There is a HUGE
switch building that just got built down the road. I can
remember when all they had on the site as a generator
and a little storage shed sized building. They added on
a bit to the little building and then built this huge brick
faced monolith with no windows. Really cool looking. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My wife has been out of work for a good six months and not
many prospects. Things are picking up since we are seeing
friends finally find jobs but the layoffs continue. I THINK we
are at the bottom of all this mess....

Rob, if you end up heading to Cary, NC let me know. I live
there and can help you find an affordable area. Cary, better
known to the Southerners as the Concentration Area of Relocated
Yankees. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif The housing is generally expensive in Cary.
With some exceptions. I live in one of the exceptions. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
There are other areas around, especially to the south that
are not as expensive and if you are going to be working out of the
Cary WorldCom office south is a good direction to go.

Good Luck,
Dan McCarty

Dan thanks for the response, I might be seeing you in a couple of weeks, Right now they still haven't given me any specifics. Currently I'm still working in the Tulsa control center and being the only point of contact for our old center while we role all of our shelves to Englewood.

Terry, hopefully you are having a better week and will find something soon. Let me know if I can help in any way.

well gotta run pickup some motorhome parts, everyone have a happy fourth.
