I have an older Jone deere tractor and ould love to keep for many more years of course, but I hve a hyd leak that I need to fix, but until than I just keep refilling the tractor ith more hyd oil to keep in running.

My question do I really need to be using the John Deere Hyd oil, VS reg tractor hyd oil ? ? ?

I know a tough question but would like to hear other opinions Thanks

Definitely a tough question...If it where my though I would fix the leak-a leak that bad can't be good for the ground you are using the tractor on!

As long as the oil meets the john deere specs i would use it. if it were a newer tractor that was still under warranty, then i would use the deere fluid. we have 5 deere's ourself & we usually use whatever we can get for a good price as long as it meets the specs deere calls for.

Robert,
I have a friend, don't we all, who pieces everything together to keep it running. When I have a problem I address it and fix it the best I can. You know what? I have more free time than he does because I'm not continually plagued by fiddly little problems that never cease.
Your leak could get worse when you need your tractor most. I'd fix it once and for all, put in fresh fluid and be done with it.
Best,
Rob

I have seen numerous post on where someone asked mif they should or could use a different and most times cheaper type of fluid.

Sorry about the pervious post as I wasn't done before it was posted. My mistake.

A while back I was watching a program on the RFD channel on T.V. John Deere was discussing the different types of oil, fluids, grease, etc. that they make and what they are used for. I was amased at the testing, analysis and technology that went into making the different types. I have a X595 and regularly change most fluids, filters using only JD brands. One fluid that I would just check just to make sure it was full was the fluid for the front axle as I didn't use FWD that much. After watching this program, I went out and changed every fluid on my X595. I always wondered why anyone would consider using a different brand than what JD recommended for their JD equipment. I know that everyone that does switch to something different always checks the specs but I have to believe there is a difference in the compounds they use to make the different brands. I know what I have invested in my X595, and I would NEVER consider using something other that what JD has developed and tested and recommends for my X595. This could also become a warranty issue if something happened to your machine/eqiupment if you were using a different brand. I know you could argue it met the same specs but that is my point, you would have to argue it but if you used the JD brand, there wouldn't be a question. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking other brands as I do use them for other applications. Since I own and believe in JD products, that is what I use. If I owned a Kubota, I would use what they made and recommended and the same for other manufacturers. Just my 2 cents.

Curt,
I don't think Deere makes their own lubricants, very few manufacturers do from Porsche to Merc to Caddy. Even Corvette uses Mobil One. With that said I have switched to purely Deere fluids myself. I was using Amsoil in my hydro but I went back to Deere Hydro. It smells less and my hoses come off easier without binding from expansion pressure like the Amsoil too.
The only place I would run someone else's oil is in the engine and that would be synthetic. I'll see how the Deere does this winter with their oil though. If it's ok I'll keep running it if I have sluggish starting in my cold climate I'll switch back to synthetic. Deere might be a semi-synthetic.

Rob,

I believe your right and I should have worded my post better. I do trust the fluids JD picked to have their labels on. I just have had really do luck with everything that I bought from JD. After watching that program I even changed the coolant in the radiator.

Curt.
