Hi all,

I'm looking at buying the Deere technical and parts manuals for my 5045D. Anyone have any experience with John Deere's publications, i.e. attention to detail, clarity, troubleshooting walk-throughs, etc.? I would assume they're the same manuals the shop mechanics work from, but I guess one should never assume. I had looked at the CD versions and I think I'd rather have the paper copies, at least for the service stuff, even though the price is almost double. I can make do with the parts manual on CD. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys...

The same manuals are used by the techs at the dealerships as you can buy. Although our dealership uses only electronic manuals, so I can't say how the paper copies compare for the past 10 years or so. There are several reasons we use electronic, first it is cheaper, second, the book is outdated as soon as it is printed. Dealerships get monthly updates for our software and we can download in between the monthly updates. Another big reason for electronic is a full set of manuals for lets say the 7R or 8R series would be more than 10,000 pages since the machine is so complex. Thats alot of books to lug around. Keep in mind, you will probably need to buy the engine repair manual to have that info. It is not included in the tractor base manual.

Yeah I'm thinking the base tech manual, the engine manual, and the parts catalog will do me well...the only other manual they sell for my rig is the starter and alternator one, and I've got a shop I take those to. I think for my use, since I wouldn't be elegible for the electronic updates anyway, a paper copy will suffice.. still like 300 pages just for the tractor manual though

Another nice thing about electronic manuals is if you print off the pages for what you're working on and if you get the pages dirty/oily it no great lose as you can print some clean pages. It's not that easy with a book.

Me personally, and its just my opinion. I like the maintence manual. Sometimes when I have a problem I'm one who hates to have to run home to the computer, pull up the electronic version, find the section I'm looking for, go to print it off, then realize the printer is out of ink, because the kids have used it all up. If I have my maintence manual it usually saves me from making that walk to the house and unexpected trip to the Walmart just to get a cartigage for the printer. But again both are a great asset. This is just my expierence that has happened more than once. Either is way better than none.
