Pardon the noobyness of this post. A neighbor recently gave us their old Deere 650 that had been sitting unused for the last 5 or so years. I have rebuilt many engines successfully but not of this size and have no experience with diesel so this is new to me. We drained and filled all fluids. Muffler was rusted apart so we removed it. Ignition key turns it over easily but am not getting any ignition. We did the bleed procedure specified in technical manual but I am not sure we are getting any fuel flow to the injectors. Is there anything else obvious we should do before bringing in a diesel mechanic?

Hi

You could remove the injectors and turn engine over either eh key while holding paper under the injectors to see if diesel is spraying out.

Hope that helps

Regards

Welcome to the forum!
Your JD650 tractor was built by Yanmar to JD specs for JD.
As for parts, you may have better luck looking at Yanmar parts suppliers than through deere, but check both.

Before you get real far into this, foes the engine turn freely? A long breaker bar and socket (extension) should allow you to turn the engine. If It is locked up, figure a complete rebuild is need and decide if you want to invest that much into small tractor.

As for no power to your ignition switch, start back at the battery.
If you have not replaced the battery, I suggest you do so. Sitting for 5+ years after ? years usage, it is a justified need. While replacing the battery, consider replacing the battery cables (both neg and pos) ensuring that the new cables make good contact at each connection spot (neg to frame is a common trouble spot).
A new ignition switch may be needed as well.

The engine turns over great, and starter is new. Just no ignition. I'm guessing injector pump or injectors, but I'm not too familiar with those devices.

It’s not uncommon for a diesel to sit for years and still run fine. I wouldn’t be too quick to start tearing things apart. I also would not recommend pulling the injection pump until you understand how it is timed.

That's exactly right. Sitting like that for a few years makes the fuel the most likely culprit - and the fuel itself, crud in the fuel tank and fuel filter, petcock, and bleeding the fuel lines is the most likely fix.
I hate to tell you that because those are the dirtiest jobs and the least sexy mechanical work....but it needs doing first.
And every diesel mechanic will say the same.

A mechanical problem is not nearly so likely unless you create one by taking things apart. A diesel can sit for a decade or more and once the fuel feed is attended to will start and run fine.
If you want to get a diesel mechanic involved, those are the things he will do first. Only after doing all of that and checking for fuel at the injectors will he even think of looking at anything mechanical.

Draining and filling all fluids, including fuel, is the first thing we did, followed by the factory bleed procedure.

Draining and filling all fluids, including fuel, is the first thing we did, followed by the factory bleed procedure.

So I understand that your engine spins but it will not fire. You have drained and replaced the fuel and bleed the fuel to the pump.
I would now suggest that you check for fuel at each injector. Carefully loosen each nut on the fuel line at the injector one at a time and crank the engine until a stead fuel supply comes out then while cranking the engine tighten the nut.
It is reasonable to believe that with 5+ years of sitting, the fuel prime may have been lost.
If you did not replace the fuel filter, do so immediately and redo the bleeding process. If the fuel system was not cleaned, add an additive to clean it paying attention to possible algae in the fuel system. Plan on frequent fuel filter changes.

An update.

When the injector pump bleed screw is open fuel pulses out with timing of the engine, so that leads me to believe the pump is doing something.
But when I removed the injector lines at the injectors, and put paper in front of it, there is no sign of spray from cranking the engine.
