What is the definition of a compact tractor.

Compact: 1.joined or packed together; closely and firmly united; dense; solid: compact soil. 2.arranged within a relatively small space: a compact shopping center; a compact kitchen. 3.designed to be small in size and economical in operation. 4.solidly or firmly built: the compact body of a lightweight wrestler.

Tractor:
1.
a powerful motor-driven vehicle with large, heavy treads, used for pulling farm machinery, other vehicles, etc.
2.Also called truck tractor. a short truck with a driver's cab but no body, designed for hauling a trailer or semitrailer.
3.something used for drawing or pulling.

Therefore, Compact + Tractor:

The compact body of a lightweight wrestler used for drawing or pulling. :D

I think I like "a firmly united motor vehicle with large, heavy treads" daffynition better, unless the wrestler knows how to run a weedeater.;)

There is an "official" definition provided in the Standards of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers jointly with ANSI (American National Standards Institute). It is included within the larger category of Agricultural Field Equipment. The relevant paragraph is:

ANSI/ASAE S390.4 JAN2005
Approved February 2005 as an American National Standard
Definitions and Classifications of Agricultural Field Equipment

3.1.1.5 compact utility tractor: A small agricultural tractor equipped
with a 540-rpm rear PTO (ASAE S203) and a three-point hitch designed
for Category I (ASAE S217) implements only. These tractors generally
have a mass less than 1800 kg (4000 lb.); have less than 30 PTO kW (40
hp) and are primarily designed and advertised for use with mowers and
light-duty material handling equipment. Tractor mass is the mass of the
unloaded tractor in operating order with tanks and radiators full, including
protective structure with cladding and any wheel equipment or additional
front-wheel drive components required to support the tractor static
weight. The operator, optional hitch equipment, optional ballast weights,
additional wheel equipment, and other special equipment are not
included.
----

Note that this standard says that CUTS "generally" have less than 40 PTO hp. It is not Engine horsepower, but PTO horsepower that is used. Standards are always subject to revision, and I assume that sooner or later this one will be as well as power levels continue to creep up.

What is the definition of a compact tractor.

Tractors above 80hp (pto) = ag tractor (set up for pulling, may or may not have 3pt hitch and/or pto shaft(s))
Tractors below 80hp (pto) = utility tractor (have 3pt and pto shaft(s))
Tractors below 40 hp (pto) = compact (utility) tractor (CUT)
Tractors below 20 hp (pto) = subcompact utility tractor (SCUT)

Just my $0.02's worth. The cutoff points are fuzzy. So everyone, including the manufacturer's, has his own opinion.

Now that you gentlemen have defined the words "compact utility tractor;" what year did the phrase start??

Here's another one...if your wife says "Awe, that's a cute tractor" (like mine did), then it's a CUT or SCUT.;)

Had I known earlier that my tractor (Kubota L-4610HSTC) was at the upper limit of HP for a compact, I would have been a whole lot snootier and into class distinction and would have speedily EDUCATED all those folks who call my Kubota a TOY tractor because of its being way smaller and lighter than an Abrams Tank.

COOOOOOOOL!!!!!!

Pat, you want to go with a Leopard. :D

Now everyone knows there are only two types of tractors. Ones that can handle two 2000 pound bales at the same time and those that can't!

Or should we say big, bigger and biggest at one end and small, smaller and smallest at the other end of the spectrum.:D

Egon, I don't have a bale handling arrangement for my 3PH but it shouldn't have a problem with a big bale on it. 2000 lbs is pushing the limit of the envelope on the FEL hay spike. I have no doubt I could navigate carrying two bales, just don't know if I could lift 2000 lbs on FEL hay spike. I suppose if I loaded the rear first and lowered it till it dragged the ground then when I speared the one in front I could raise the rear bale and maybe get a little clearance in front. The unknown is getting 2000 up in front. If I can lift it then navigating with one at each end would not be a problem. I don't recall the specs for my loader except that with the long forks it is limited to 13xx lbs due to fork length. It is rated to pick up more with short forks and I don't know what the rating is for the spike or even recall the rating for the basic loader.

If I couldn't pick it up I could roll it! ;) ;)
