We have been going to Tybee Island, Ga for 30 yrs. and it is always crowded at the beach ...take a look at the beach this year. No oil but no people either.

I would have thought with the oil leaking into the Gulf folks would have come to the East Coast beaches.. I guess not.

Have'nt been to Tybee but a few times in many visits to Savannah, but lots more folks than that. I enjoy going to Desposito's in Thunderbolt, Ga. whenever I'm there or Mary's on Abercorn street. I would expect things to pick-up by this evening though.

Folks are probably going broke. Just this week alone (dow down everyday this week), I've lost thousands of dollars.

Did you really need to mention that Mark? :) I think I'm going to try and ignore the market for about a year. It's disheartening to watch it slide back down. Don't look :confused2:

As far as the beach crowd goes, people are funny that way. They hear about oil on a beach and cancel their plans - eventhough most beaches aren't affected. Or, they have to book 1-2 months ahead and fear there will be oil on the beach by then.

Our youngest son works in a restaurant on the south Maine coast. Their business has been way up from last year, which was in the toilet. I asked him if he thought more people were there because of the gulf oil, but he couldn't say. That area draws lots of tourists form NY, MA, CT, NJ areas.

Yeah I figured St Augustine was gonna be covered this year when Amy and I went for our aniversary. Every never been anywhere hick I talked to here when they asked about why would I go down there in that oil. I usually told them theres more than one side to Florida. My PITA motherinlaw asked Amy why we wanted to go down there in all that oil. I took the phone and told her I wallowed in oil and sand mechanicing during the week so that the oil would make me feel at home. Then I told Amy to buy her a map. I have a friend that hauls hazmat and has said Gulfport and biloxi looks like a ghost town on the beach.

Tourism here in Michigan is way down. I think the stock market thing affects even people who don't have money in the market. Markets are about psychology, and right now they are simply psycho. Throw in the real estate meltdown, and lots of folks feel poor.

I feel poor :p

With the large swings in the DOW lately, I am inclined to believe there is more than market psychology in play. Like when it moves 100+ points either direction in one afternoon. The financial news isn't changing that fast. And with the possible exception of the Euro debt daily developments, not that many real surprises either, that haven't already been factored in already.

You are right, the market does have an effect on people's inclination to spend money. The volatility is almost as bad as a steady decline. I have read some articles saying high-speed automated trading is partly to blame.

Even at today's gas prices it is still $.50 per mile of fuel only for the MH. While that is a consideration with the kids turning 13 this year they have something going on all of the time that makes getting away as a family VERY HARD to plan a get away.

In most homes where income have been reduced by any amount there still are the same $$$ monthly home/car/CC payments due so financial flexibility has been reduced.

Even some who are retired with good incomes find the "need" to help out with the kids/grandkids for one reason or another can suck up travel $$$.

Our rush as a country to third world status may be proceeding faster than some planned.

Well the USA is 5 figures richer after our road trip to virginia!
We saw lots of new construction - big homes - and the malls were all busy.
Hotels & restaurants were packed etc... we stayed and eat at various levels of places too!

Gas was 1/3 less than in Canada, food prices were about the same. Of course liquor is cheap - 40-60% less. We pay the difference in tax on our liquor up here.
