I have a Deutz-Allis 5220 with a 435 Quick Detach Front End Loader and optional power steering.

The hydraulic pump has been replaced but the power steering has pump has not

Have had this tractor since 1989 and it has given good service overall.

Do you have any advice as how to troubleshoot the power steering pump and power assist cylinder?

Also, can parts be obtained anywhere?

Thanks,

Looking at the parts book ( AGCO Parts Books Enter the site as "guest"), I don't see where it uses a separate power steering pump. It has a flow divider valve so I assume it only uses one pump. If you know the pump is good, it is probably either a bad valve or cylinder seals.

Was this a sudden problem or did it develop/ get worse over time?

Daryl,

The steering pump is on the same page with the lift pump, it is shown below the lift pump...http://www.agcopartsbooks.com/PartsBooksN/Viewer/book.aspx?book=agco/79007514. If you notice the drive gears are in reverse order of the lift pump. I'm pretty good at looking at parts catalogs because I farmed for many years and used them regularly.

This afternoon with the tractor running, I opened the pressure side where the hose attaches to the cylinder, and it did not seem to have any pressure at that point. I really don't know if the problem was gradual or sudden because the tractor was not here with me for several years. I have a hydraulic gauge that I am going to attach to the pressure hose and see how much pressure is at that point tomorrow if time permits. I actually have a parts catalog but don't have a service manual so I don't know how much pressure the pump should be producing.

Thanks,

Jim

I cant say for sure on pump pressure but I would expect it to be somewhere between 1500-2200psi. I'd check pressure at the cylinder ( sounds like you already suspect there's not much there) then as close to the pump as possible. That may tell you if it's a stuck relief......probably not telling much by that, it sounds like you're pretty mechanically adept.
