Ok, here is the latest (surely won't be the last) problem with my home network. Started all three computers yesteday and have no network connection. Cables, hub, network cards are all good. I cannot 'ping' any address of any type. The event viewer shows a 'DHCP' problem. See picture. My machines have used a static ip for about a year now. All three now have decided to use DHCP. This is a mutiny /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

All three computers show the same error in the event viewer. The detail view shows that each has a different new DHCP address which is outside the range of known addresses. See picture. How can I turn DHCP off and return to my happy land of static IP ?

Start, Control Panel, Network and DialUp Connections, Local Area Connection, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Properties.

Obtain An IP Automatically is selected.

Change it to

Use the following IP address

Each PC has to be on the same subnet, i.e.,

PC1 192.168.1.1
PC2 192.168.1.2
PC3 192.168.1.3

See attached.

Thanks Mike, Start, run, commands, ipconfig, shows the ip that is assigned to my ethernet card. It is the same address that is seen in my second picture. (not the goofy 'out-of-range' one) When I manually configure (per your instructions) the ip address to this setting it does not make any difference. I find it very strange that all three computers are displaying this problem. The network ran great for a year, now this strange event occured. I am wondering if an invasive code has entered my network. This code could be readdressing the IP in an attempt to use my computer(s) as a drone.
I have tried physically removing my network cards, rebooting, reinstalling the network cards, reinstalling the driver, verifying that I am using the right network names and groups. I cannot even 'ping' 127.0.0.1 on any of the three machines (IP loopback). Also, when I go to my network places, computers near me, the machines cannot find ""a list of servers"". Even with a bad router or cable, each machine should be able to see 'itself' on the network, but cannot.
Any thoughts on this?

Not sure exactly what setup you have, but if you are using fixed IP, DHCP should be turned off in your router too if it supports it. Any chance that that the router is serving DHCP and that is part of the problem?

goto a dos windows and type ipconfig
What addess is assiged to each machine?

What is your network config look like? How do you know the hub is good if all 3 computers are not working? What sort of router are you using? Is any machine running dhcp server?

Do you have a good virus protection? The hell_B virus is going around and it does some nasty stuff.

I am using a linksys 10/100 switch hub. I am not aware of this device having any settings. There is no driver or software.

IPconfig reports that the ethernet card is using the IP address that you see in the first picture. But DHCP is setting it to something else.

I think the hub is good because all the indicator lights come on when I plug in the cables.

I run Norton anti-virus and firewall. Both are up to date.

How do I know if a machine is running DHCP server?

To clarify: Last summer I installed an ethernet card in each machine and installed the driver. I then plugged each machine into the hub. I joined the workgroup and gave each machine a unique name. (Audrie, Dale, Oscar) I right-clicked on C drive and enabled sharing on each machine. The network immediately started working and has been trouble free until now. (no configuration or IP addressing was necessary)

Hey Mike, referring to your picture, what should I do with the DNS options at the bottom of the menu?

There may be another problem that occured with your Hub.

I cannot remember the exact name of the switch, but if you enable/disable (cannot remember which way it is), the hub goes into either a passive or ?? mode. (Geez, being off for a few months makes you forget things!!!!)

Check out your hubs user manual to check these settings. You probably want to have the hub as a passive device.

If you have cats, dogs, kids, wifies that clean, or somehow do other clumbsy things near the switch, it is easy to change the setting.

Hope this helps.

Hmm, interesting. I did move the switch hub recently, but I made sure that the cables were all plugged in and that all the connection lights were lit. I have never noticed any kind of buttons, knobs, or switches on it. I had the wife take a look and she has confirmed that there are no adjustments of any type /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Thanks.
