I have a LT 1042 with a 19 horse Kohler. has 190 hours on it. Today while cutting it started sputtering and sounding funny then shut down. Cranks over great but sounds like a popping sound from exhaust. I have over 100 lbs compresion, getting great spark, and gewtting fuel. Does not even try to start, just turns over. Any ideas?

If you have the Courage engine they are known for shearing the flywheel key which would throw the timing off. It's not always obvious by just looking at the flywheel and may require pulling it. They use a soft key to prevent damage and some engines didn't have the flywheel torqued correctly.

Sheared flywheel keys on riders are rare, and unless you have had the flywheel off recently I doubt that is what it is. I would start looking more into valve issues, start by pulling the valve cover and removing the spark plug and turn the engine over by hand and watch the valves. Push rod issues and camshaft issue are more common than flywheel keys. Hitting hard objects and killing the engine normally won't shear the key on a rider engine. Too many things to absorb the impact. between the deck/drive and the engine.
It was not the key. Still it says timing issue to me? It turns over slowly, like a low battery and its backfiring through the carb. I guess I'll pull the valve cover, but I do not know what I am looking at. I have never worked on a small engine like this.
