OK! I need help . I just bought a 72" Ford 918H Flail Mower for $150 . It needs a few welds redone and is missing two teeth . Everything else looks good . The lady gave me a box full of new cutting teeth . I am plannig on using it behind my 45HP tractor . So here is my main concern . I have a 45 acre ranch where I will use it . About 15 is in grass that is about 3' tall ! A real fire hazard !The rest is in brush and pines . Do I need to worry about a fire getting started from the teeth ? Will it chop up small brush or trees less than 1"-1 1/2 " in diameter ? I had never had one or used one and could really use some help .
Thanks, BigAl

The DOT here uses flail mowers for right of way maintenance. No evidence of brush fires even during droughts. A flail mower does a number on anything you can get under the mower. That's the key. If you can't knock the brush down with the unit so the flails can chop it up, it won't work.

If you ease through the heavy stuff, the unit will probably surprise you with how well it works.

I don't have a clue about a flail mower, I just wanted to welcome you back and hope your wife and you had a great trip. John

Thanks John ,
Yes, Panama was great and we had a good time . I headed up to Idaho as soon as I hit the states again and ran into this flail mower . It sure seemed like a answer to my grass and small brush problems . Now I have to work like crazy to get the old ranch house livable again before the snows hit .I've never seen so many Elk in my life as this old place has on it .I spend half my time just staring at them . That does not help to get anything done ! The old timers tell me first snow will be in September or October at the latest ! We don't have a computer at the place and I have to run down to the school and use theirs, which is allowed two days a week . Allen

I have a JD 25A flail. It should work great for what you want. It is very forgiving about hitting rocks, but will easily cut 1" . If it can't cut the tree it will just leave in a worse condition than when you found it (few limbs and no leaves).
