Have a question about the exhaust smell on my very old Kubota B7100 tractor with well over 3000 hours on her. It's been this way since I have owned it.....4 years now......seems that the exhaust has a strange smell to it..........well it just plain stinks actually. It's not the normal diesel smell that I'm familiar with it's got a frier grease type smell it's hard to discribe. When it starts there is white smoke which I have been told is condensation in the fuel, and then it goes away after it warms up. No black smoke only when I give it throttle fast. It has plenty of power and it sounds like the normal diesel engine it is with that many hours on it. I have only smelled that once before on an older Kubota R400 that has a much miles as well. They said it burns a little antifreeze from a head gasket leak or something. Mine has not needed a drop of water in all four years. I would say the stink factor is about 7 on a scale of 10.

Any ideas would be helpful,

Thanks...Scott

biofuel? How much oil does it use? oil burning. Algae in fuel tank

My diesel truck does that on oil changes. Seems the crankcase oil has a pretty powerful stink for a while. Then, after several hours of operation, whatever the oil additive is that stinks wears out. I mostly notice it when stopped at a light or something. Next time, take the oil breather off or your engine dipstick and take a sniff to see if it's coming from the crankcase.

At work I use Rotella in the trucks and after a service the smell coming out the vent smells like sulfer for about the first 1000 miles . After that the smell goes away.

I've only had that when using Rotella oil. I call it "Mo-Smella" it reeks.

I agree, both our 782d diesel cub cadet, Kubota powered, and my old 6.2L pickup both stink right after an oil change with Rotella oil. The white smoke isnt from condensation, if you had water in your fuel, you would have greater problems than stink. The white smoke is showing its about time to change glow plugs. The white smoke is paritialy burnt and unburnt diesel fuel as the cylinders try to warm up enough to fire. It can also signal a loss of compression from wear. Diesels need high compression to heat up the air in the cylinder and cause the diesel fuel to burn when injected. How much blow by comes out the little tube from the valve cover? If it looks like a small steam pipe then your about due for an overhaul. I would check your fuel filter and see how it looks, look for signs of algie in the fuel, if it does you can drain the tank and change the fuel filter. Might be just showing her age. Mike

I have a Powerstroke in a 96 F350. I changed the crankcase vent to discharge to the atmosphere rather than back into the intake. It smells greatly after an oil change with any of the oils I've used, be it Rotella T, Chevron Delo or Mobil Delvac. The smell does diminish after a couple of thousand miles.
BTW the reason I changed it to vent externally is because I added an aftercooler, the oil vapors will accumulate in the cooler diminishing its efficiency, even worse it will lube up the silicone hump hoses and I've had them blow off under high boost when working hard. Don't really like the oil vapors going out but after several side of the road experiences putting hoses back under the clamps...well:cool:
