got the frame done. the diesel engine is mounted. i am waiting to get the generator head back from the shop. i had new heavy duty bearings installed. i have a 25 gallon fuel tank to install, and i still have work to do on the control panel. this gen-set is air-cooled, and puts out 8000 watts.

I was wishing for the same thing as you.

Me too.

Is this a 3600 rpm diesel engine and gen head? Any plans on quieting the thing down? How do you intend to use it? If stationary I wonder why you didn't go for one of the imported water cooled units like changfa or a lister clone. utterpower.com

the winco generator is a 2 pole 3600 rpm head. the diesel is a deutz/ruggerini with glow plug and large oil capacity sump. for the exhaust i have a 2 foot flex pipe and a muffler.
the frame is on dumpster casters, but this is for moving it around easily in the garage while working on it. i will place a commercial kitchen type rubber mat under it and bolt it to a old 4 wheel hand truck i got from a steel mill.
this set-up will make it easy to start in cold weather, so the wife can start it. the gen-set i made before had a big hand crank start wisconsin engine on it and it was hard to start one winter when the temp was -5 below zero. this will be stationary for the most part, but can be hoisted into a pickup truck and taken wherever if need be. i have been to the utterpower site before, and i like the lister clone engines.. but if i sell this gen-set in the future the next set up will be a kubota or detroit diesel as the prime mover....

I am particularly interested int eh engine and how you attached the flex hose. Believe it or not, I currently use metal flex conduit for the flex hose on my coleman 5500/6850 watter powered by a tecumseh 11 HP gas engine. I welded a pipe fitting to the OEM small muffler and ran from there to a surplus motorcylce muffler. Works great but I need a package that will fit within the generator frame and not a long flex hose with a muffler setting on the ground.

I have never seen a small air cooled diesel engine with glow plugs and e-start. Does it have estart? That would be a nice feature when it is 5 below.

The problem with the lister clones, though really cool, is the weight. The genset will not be very mobile. Many of the ideas from that site can be incorporated into your genset though.

Do you lose power often? Or do you even have power at your site?

the engine is electric start. 24 volt system. it's a brand new military surplus engine. an extra spare for a portable light tower.. i am still trying to locate two stop solenoids. one for the stop and the other for the throttle.24 volt would be great, but 12 volt will do also.. the exhaust flex is 2" ID, its from the auto parts store. the muffler is from TSC and its a tractor muffler with the diameter i need for this engine. i'm still locating control panal parts, well mostely a frequency panel mount meter. if i have to i will just use a kill-o-watt digital meter. i should get the gen. head back from the shop any day now. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
we dont loose power very much, once or twice a year at most. but a few years back in the cold winter weather it was a life saver for 8 hours or so. you never know, it's piece of mind, and now the wife can start it too. i would'nt let her touch the hand crank wisconsin engine, she would break her arm for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My father-in-law built a similar generator. Generac sells all the auxiliary bits for control and monitoring. It's smooth as butter.
