Diesel generator will not start

Hello All,
I was hoping to try and find some help here, I am at a loss!
I just purchased a Diesel generator (6500) and went to start it and it will not go, it turns over with the compression release on, but when i release the compression release, it acts like when the motor is on a compression stroke, but starter just stops, like it cannot turn it fast enough, or does not have enough poop. I thought it could be the battery, so I charged it with a battery tender (the tender says the battery is now fully charged) and still the same, turns good during compression rrelease.!!??
I have also changed out the fuel and added fresh diesel with an oz. of red line diesel catalyst. I also broke the fuel line open at the injector and it comes out nicely and appears to be air free.
also, because it seems to be turning over kind of slow, I tried to jump start the battery with my car, still hits a stroke and stops, when I jump it I do not turn the motor on to the car.
I am now at a complete loss of what to do. Also this small Yanmar motor does not have a glow plug. I should also mention it is a single cylinder, air cooled unit.

I would clean the battery connections and be sure not to miss the positive connection to the starter and the ground. If it still cannot turn the motor, I would remove the starter and bring it to someone who can bench test it.

This is somewhat related but I found my 92 Harley making a wierd noise instead of starting and it could only turn the engine when the spark plugs were removed. I removed the starter and had a local company bench test it and he said the aperture was spent and it did not produce enough cranking power to turn the big v-twin. I replaced it with a brand new starter and problem solved.

Most likely your starter is spent, they don't last long on diesels...
