i've been considering these on and off for some time but haven't pulled the trigger. what i REALLY want is a water-cooled 1800RPM diesel genset but they demand some serious coin and i haven't found a deal on a used one yet.

besides the generators technically, there's some nuances to the purchase process from gov't auctions.

there's a lot of information in various threads here: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/forumdisplay.php?55-Auxiliary-Equipment&

I don't know that I would want a genset with over 5000 hours on it that was likely used in the deserts of Afghanistan. Even diesel engine wear out and that dust and sand couldn't have been good for the generator either.

I stand corrected. The Onan in this case is a licensed copy of a Lister Petter and water cooled. I was thinking of the 002 which were sold in massive qtys over the years and are very noisy.

I got the genset from a trailer type lighting unit that had 1300 hours on it before it got blown over in a gale. That destroyed the lights and tower and the trailer got pretty messed up. It has a 3 cylinder water cooled engine of modern design, with radiator, muffler etc and I paid <$800 for it. I think I was lucky at that price, but I had been looking for quite a while.

It says 1 & 3 phase.
I had a 15kw Onan LP generator. It was rated 15kw 3ph and 10kw 1 ph. The 1 ph needed to be balanced on the 3 legs.
That generator was thirsty too! It would suck dry a 20# PP tank in 20 minutes! Had ice/condensation sticking it to the concrete when empty.

I had an 802A for a while and sold it. I have another right now 100% torn down for resotarion to like new. I had to replace the head gasket so I thought why not?

In general they are really great machines. Top shelf Onan generator and current production Lister Petter OPW engines. The LP design was licensed to Onan and Onan makes it 100% interchangeable with LP. Onan sold an enclosed civilian model too. So Parts are available from multiple sources including onan and Lister Petter.

They don't have the overload that the 002 has but they are very quiet, civilized and have a nice panel and a big diagnostic plug that can be used with just a meter to identify a variety of circuits.

The fuel tanks frequently leak at the remote drain connection. This is a major headache to fix as the tank does not come out easily. I now plastic weld that hole shut because the fuel is readily drained by siphoning.

The cooling systems are subject to need radiator caps replaced and head gaskets can be a problem. When you look at a unit or photos look for sign of white coolant tracking at the head joint on the starter side. You will be surprised at how many show it. But that issue is easily fixed. In fact the head gasket I just replaced was fine. The military fixed it but did not clean up the mess. The replacement head gaskets are updated. No further issues expected.

The fuel system is ultra reliable but is a challenge to synchronize the individual injection pumps. I do it by reading exhaust temps on the manifold legs, get it close and call it a day.

Personally, I really like this model. It is so high quality. Of this series of generators the 802A and 803A are the only ones with 100% aluminum skid and enclosure. The bigger 800 series ones use steel and it rusts in coastal environment. These are also EMP proof according to the military, if that matters to you.

The parts are pricey because they are not yet in mainstream circulation. they are current inventory until 2017.

I don't think any owner regrets having one.

Auction prices are $1,300 to $2,200 for the 802 and $1750 to $2,800 for the 803. Condition is everything and there are plenty being dumped because they are beat up and worn out. But some truely like new ones exist too. Just know what your getting.

Oh, the Lister petter is a 9000+ hour engine. Reports of over 20,000 hours when not fully loaded 100% of the time and not used in severe environments. Lots of info on the OPW. Been in production since the early 80's and well refined. The 802/03 military ones seem to start around early 90's and go on up. I have seen an '07 and '08 at auction.

I have not seen one yet that has signs of wet stacking. So they may be very resistant to it. Wet Stacking is a condition whereby a lightly loaded water cooled diesel will loose the hone pattern on the cylinder, rings quit seating and pump oil in a black sooty tar like substance out the exhaust. The older watercooled 004, 005, with the Hercules engines were very suseptable to this.

Govt surplus equip. can be great or a nightmare. I would shy away from military stuff. Cant really speak for civilian equip.
I had a 10KW MEP genset 20+ years ago. 1965 model rebuilt. ran great for the first couple of years, then it was one thing after another. Finally the voltage regulator went out and I ended up sell it for scrap metal. The thing weighed 850# and drank gas like no tommorow. The MEP was manufactured under military contract, even though the engine on mine was built by Hercules, they(Hercules) has absolutley no records, because once the contract is up the records go back to the military.
PROS: usually a cheap inital investment.
built like tanks
might be able to find a manual online
CONS: cannot find parts
weigh as much as a tank
military maintenance & upkeep would be tiptop, civilian side may be a crap shoot.

as a side note: there is a great deal of info and support online now days that didn't exist when I had my surplus genset.

I never saw a military generator that didn't suck up fuel like it was free! The ones we had were good running machines tho, we had a good maintenance section that made sure preventive maintenance and checks were done before and after each use. Odds are that a surplus generator would be a good buy, dollar wise, but every once in awhile, they'll have an auction lot or two that are there because they're worn out and it's repair costs would be prohibitive.

I would never buy one sight unseen, but if you can physically check them before bidding, you can probably get a good deal.

One note, the hour meters on do NOT necessarily reflect the hours on the engine. They are often replaced and are only really worthwhile to tell how long its been since maintenance was performed.
Condition, Condition, Condition is the only way to evaluate these.

WOW, yes, very lucky! I would love to find something like that.
