Tractor
Universal 640 DTC
i am working on my universal 640 DTC which is a romanian built fiat same thing as a Long or, so I am told a White 1370. OK So here is the story

The tractor has run very well since I bought it about 10 years ago. Recently I noticed that the oil level was going UP!! And then very shortly after that the tractor started to emit some white / blue smoke out of the exhaust. Shortly after that, I started it one day and anit freeze came out the exhaust pipe.

The whole time the tractor ran fine and had plenty of power. (I did not run it after I realized it was a bad head gasket--that is when the coolant came out the exhaust)

I have had the head pressure tested and have had the valves and seats reground and had the surface ground.

Here come the most recent question. Since I had the injectors out, I took them to my local farm equipment dealer to have them pop tested. They are supposed to pop at 3250 PSI. One popped at 1200 two popped at 2800 and one at 2600. The one that popped at 1200 had a good spray pattern but one of the others was squirting rather than atomizing.

My plan is to interchange the nozzle on the 1200 PSI injector with the one with 2800 and use the 1200PSI injector as a core to replace the entire unit.

Question one--is this a good idea

Question two--Is it possible that a bad injector could have caused my head gasket to go bad?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long story.

Hello BJOHA. Short ansur NO. In my opinion chang all the injectors. The chang in opening presure changes the timing. A fluding injector can cause a cracked head. Did you test the high oil level for fuel in the oil. I'm not fimiluar with your tractor, but some diesels when the injector pump leaks, some times it goes in the oil. It could be just bad injectors flouding and leaking past the rings.

Replace all injectors, set to same pressures. Cylinder pressures need to be about the same when running, cannot be if injectors are fouled...Leaking, streaming, or non atomizing injectors can cause dilution of the crankcase oil, therefore raising the level of engine oil. Worst than that Puddling fuel on the top of pistons is real hard on the head and gaskets, ever notice the real hard knock?..

Not going to happen unless he takes it somewhere that will pop test and shim. Most new and rebuilds can be off by 500psi or not even work.

So pop test your new ones as well.

I did not have that problem with the one's I bought, but they were BOSCH and new. I did have a set rebuilt at the inj shop and they were over $50.00 apiece to get them back with new nozzels for my 6.2 chevy..I have never seen them pretest new injectors for our Cummins gen-sets. I was wondering who made them for Romainia, as their tractors are pretty scarce around here?

My tractor was made by UTB Universal and it has Romanian made injectors. I just put new ones in mine and I dindnt have them pop tested. They work fine. Your Universal tractor has the same motor as a Long 610 so the injector should be the same. The injector part number for your tractor is
TX17402.

Thanks for the part number. I just got ripped off and paid 100 per injector. That was the price quoted by both the parts people I called. It is listed on Ebay for 56 bucks.

Thanks again. I hate 200 dollar mistakes!!!!!!

hi your best bet is to replace all injectors with new. the new are all factory set and will be fine, as far as your tractor i used to own a long 510 dtc 4x4 dam good tractor .i bought it new in 1988 its a 1986 year, did alot of hard work ,had lots of power for its size, etc. my brother owns it now i tried to buy it back , ha! he said no way,not for sale.i think you will find if you replace all the injectors you will be in buisness after everything else checks out.hope this helps and good luck.

I bought mine from that same guy on Ebay. I offered him 200 even for all four and he accepted. I should have checked that out for you. My bad. The new injectors for mine had the clamp to bolt them down built into the injector. They are a newer version but still fit just fine.
