I am thinking about getting a little used diesel riding mower to power a log splitter. Kubota makes a G5200 and there is one for sale near me. It says it is a HST.

Does anyone know if there is a hydraulic port on these that I can get pressure and sufficient flow off of to power a splitter? I am sure it has a pump, as it runs the HST, but is there an easy way to port it?

Thoughts?

I doubt there is enough usable PSI or GPM top power a logsplitter. And just becasue it has a HST does not mean there is a external pump anyway. Even if it has power/hydrostatic steering, the flow and pressure would be to low for a logsplitter.

As kennyd said, you won't have anything to use to power the splitter. At most, you will have a small hydraulic pump to lift the mowing deck. This pump will have low flow and maximum pressure of 300 to 500 psi. The transmission case contains a small auxiliary pump for lifting the deck. The HST is a dedicated hydraulic pump controlled by the foot pedal position. This changes the angle of a swashplate in the pump to provide flow to a hydraulic motor at infinitely variable flow rate and direction for speed and direction control of the mower.

If you want to have a log splitter, go buy a new or used dedicated splitter with a gasoline engine and pump. Don't mess up a nice lawn tractor by trying to make it power the splitter. You'll end up with a costly mess that won't come close to doing what you want. The only way you want to attach a log splitter to a lawn tractor is through the trailer hitch. You'd have a great setup to use the mower to pull the splitter and a trailer full of firewood around.:)

What are they asking for the G5200? Just curious.

And I agree with the comments, that the riding mower wouldn't come close to pressure and flow requirements of a splitter.
Adding a pump to the PTO output to use the diesel power might be another option to consider.

On my G2160 all there is for a pump is the charge pump and they use a little from that for raising deck and dumping the bagger, and they are single action cylinders. Some of the garden tractors have like a 1000rpm PTO option for a rear rototiller that you may use. But like a did for mine is put a hitch on it and tow the Speeco 34ton splitter around with it and use the BX for loading the fire wood. Much easier and faster cycle rate.

If you want to power it from a diesel riding mower, I might look into making something like : Agriculture equipment, farm magazines, farm equipment, farm inventions, farm machinery, agriculture machinery or http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=137588

If starting with a GR series Kubota, I might do the following:
1. Extend the frame to make it longer (so that the splitting table started just in front of the hood)
2. Put new (larger) wheels in the front with hydrualic steering
3. Widen the frame enough to mount a hydraulic reservoir on one side
4, Offset the splitting table to one side
5. Extend the wheel ~1' on one side (with a stub shaft and hub attached to the existing shaft on the transaxle).

The problem is that by the time you do that, you could start with a ranger or S10, replace the bed with a flatbed and a splitter and have a machine that could carry the wood as well.

If you have a splitter currently that just has a bad engine, you could mount the pump to the PTO shaft on the GR and pull it around behind the GR with hoses running back to the tank.

I have a old 18hp cman mower that ive been thinking about converting into a mobile hydraulic powerpac that i can add attachments to. Might keep it drivable or i might make it walk behind so i can add a sweeper or mower . dont know yet as i really dont have the time to invest into doing it.

My plan is to duplicate the harley rake walk behind.YouTube - Harley Walk Behind Power Unit Box Rake

So ill be following this thread for ideas:thumbsup:

I found someone that was parting out a Scag mower with a D1105 Kubota. I matched a pump to it and put it all on a trailer... now I have one splitting machine...
