Diesel Storage Containers for winter.

This has probably been covered but what the heck.

With winter coming, I want to have a few extra gallons of diesel just in case. I have a 5 gal. metal can (painted the appropriate yellow PC color). I want to get one or two more containers and do not wish to buy another metal container (too expensive).

1. Recommendations for containers - especially brands.
2. How many? Loaded question, I know. Winters here can be very kind or somewhat brutal because we lay between two mountain ridges. Tractor will mainly be used to remove/push snow.
3. Fuel stabilization - covered ad nauseum but which one is the "best".
4. Where to store? Outside in the shed - possibility of geling when really cold. In basement - well, maybe????

This will be my first winter with a tractor and I want to be prepared!!

Though I don't know the brand, I'll try to describe what we have.

1.

We have 3 old metal cans (In furture, I'll avoid that type)
3 plastic (yellow) cans that have the push/pull spout.
1 (unfortunately) plastic can with removable spout that has it's own "storage" space.

The 3 plastic ones are much thinner in thickness and cheaper feeling than the other yellow one.

As far as usage, I have noticed the one with removable spout SPILLS essentially nothing, especially, when you compare to the push/pull spout type. I have decided I really don't like that style. I was filling Brutus one day and jostled can around, hit push/pull spout (evidently I pushed it) cause it retracted some and I got fuel everywhere. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I'm ready to "can" the can's I don't like and replace all of them with the single style I DO like. (with removable spout)

Also, just for .02, the cans with push/pull spouts are much shorter/wider than my favorite can. It seems to be tall & narrow. I don't know if I like that or not yet as it seems a bit more unstable & ready to fall over if set down thoughtlessly.

I like to have enough such that I can totally refill my tank. My tank holds something like 25 gallons I think (never really measured)

4. Ours is in fact kept outside near the woodpile. No protection from elements at all. (not my choice, but Uncles)

I have two yellow plastic diesel cans I just bought at Lowes for $8.99 each. The spouts are of the push-pull variety, similar to my gasoline cans, with which I haven't had any problems with leaks. They have a handle on the top and the side, which makes pouring a lot easier. I like the plastic because if you slip while pouring, they won't <font color=red> scrape the paint off your hood!</font color=red>/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I don't know anything about your other questions. . . sorry.

I can't really help with your question but you may have answered mine.

I believe that "red" jerry cans are for "gasoline" and "dark" are for water (I have seen blue and brown and green). Is "yellow" the official color for diesel fuel canisters?

I am using a 6 gallon orchard supply special red plastic gas can for my diesel and have wondered if I should be using something else.

Also, how does the shelf life of diesel compare to the shelf life of gasoline? I keep 20 gallons of gasoline in metal jerry cans for emergencies (we do get earthquakes around here and I have a 5hp gasoline powered generator) that I dump into vehicles and replace every 6 months or so (hmm, well at least once a year). With only the 'bota sipping maybe a gallon a month of diesel, am am a little concerned about it going off before I use it.

Yes. The red ones don't hurt the diesel; you just don't want to get mixed up and put the wrong fuel in the wrong machine.

That's the reason I don't personally have anything but red, John./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Well . . ., except my blue 55 gallon barrel. It makes my Kubota cringe when I refuel, but it hasn't puked it back up yet.
