Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Howdy all, this is my first post so bear with me. I heard about a Ford 6610 2wd w/fel, a couple of years ago. Clutch was frozen(sitting outside, disk rusted to input shaft). It got hauled to a private shop(to be worked on as time permitted)and was put back together sometime in the last 2 yrs. Now they put the disk in backwards. So i'm guessing they had the tractor running, just not sure when. As the man who had bought the tractor didn't really need it ,it is still in the shop. First words out of his mouth was "now I ain't seen this tractor in 2 yrs".So I'm going to look at the tractor this weekend, and my question is : What things should I look for, problems from sitting so long, etc . I know to check fluids (at drain plugs, as water would be at the bottom) any thing else? Thank Toby

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Personally, I wouldn't even consider this machine. I can do mechanical work...but I'm not a good enough mechanic to restore that machine or keep it running. Now, the question is...are you?

So, I'd look elsewhere for a running tractor and pass on this one.

I did a search on Machinefinder.com...most 6610's listed are in Europe.

There's quite a few large tractors available on the market. Try a search on Machinefinder.com and see what's available in your area.

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Howdy Roy ,thanks for the reply. I may do just like you said "look elsewere".
I have got about 14 tractors in the "shed" from machine finder, and I have been to the local dealers looking also.
I never did get ASE cert., but I think I still got a shirt with a "shadetree" patch on the sleeve. Now were did I put that baleing wire. Grin, Thanks again. Toby /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Welcome.
You need to treat this like you are buying a boat on cradles at an auction. Expect everything to need fixed and price it accordingly. I would expect to pay no more than the cost of hauling it home.

All the best,
Martin

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Howdy AntrimMan ,thanks for the info.
I went and looked at the tractor. Hood paint purty much gone, seat shot, both piddly things.Tractor hasn't been started in about a year. The owner told me he would get it back together and let me try it out to see what I thought about it . Its a Ford (not sure what year) 5640, w/Bush hog 2425QT Fel, its 2wd. Just shy of 1500 hrs. Talked to a man who knew the history of tractor, and no red flags there. At 66 pto hp, and a 1/3 of price of nearly new Jd 5205 4wd (no fel) .I'm willing to give it a shot.
I took pictures of it , just not sure how to post. Thanks again to all who replyed . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Howdy David , well (Ford) tractor is "still sitting". I'm not sure if they will get it "running" on the Christmas shutdown or not. As so many others have found out, I have come to think that I really do need a FEL. The other "truth" is that with a FEL you need 4wd, so I've about give up on the Ford.
The other drawback that I've run into, is that what ever tractor that I get ,the Fel has to be able to clear 9 ft. (8' 9" )that is the height of the sides on my truck. I could build up a ramp or dug out a place, but may not be able to at all locations.
So far (as any good country boy can) I've been able to get things done with out a tractor. You can pull up a fair size tree with a 24k pound dump truck, grin
Hope all had a Very Merry Christmas, thanks for asking. Toby

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Four wheel drive with a FEL is nice, but if the price is right, why not go with a two wheel drive? I am looking for a bolt on FEL for my JD2555, and it is two wheel drive. Add some weight to the rears, or maybe even duals if your not in close quarters, and have fun. For years, people used backhoes that were two wheel drive, and didn't compain till somebody figured out 4wd could increase productivity. Two wheel FEL will outwork most shovels I have owned.

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Well , I haven't given up on a 2wd, just haven't been looking at them hard. And none of the ones that I have seen (tractors or deals) are anywere close to your "55". grin. Hope you had a good New Year. Toby

Re: Diesel tractor been sitting for \"awhile\"

Went to Live Oak, Florida and spent the day with my favorite inlaw. He sold me my first tractor, and cheap. (had to be cheap, or he wouldn't have sold it to me, lol)
He has a nice JD compact, with small backhoe and loader. Kind of in the middle between my 1100 Ford and the JD2555.
Ate plenty and came home stuffed.
