Does anybody know how much a gallon of diesel or heating oil weighs? I might get into trouble if I put a 5 gallon can on the bathroom scales. I have a tank with 200 gallons I need to move.

Thanks

Mark,

Diesel = 52.1 Lbs / cubic foot

1 cubic foot= 7.48 gallons

Diesel 6.96 lbs/ gallon

200 gallons = 1393 lbs

Or 7.1 lbs for no1
and 7.6 lbs for no2
6.9 lbs for kerosene
and 6.2 lbs for gasoline

So, assuming no2, you got 1520 lbs to cart, plus the weight of the tank. I'd drain it first. Dropped a home heating tank once, with 100 gallons of no2, talk about a mess.

Keep the greasy side down.

Mike,

I got my numbers from a pocket reference by Thomas J. Glover. 1520 lbs vs 1393 is a pretty good difference, what the heck is going on? The handbook did not identify #1 and #2 diesel just diesel. Thanks for setting things straight but I would like to know where the difference is?

Al, there's bound to be some discrepancy converting from cubic feet to gallons, considering they round off everything. But, I'm wondering if maybe what was in the book, might not have been a diesel/kerosene mixture? Also marine diesel is a different weight, as is some jet fuel. Anyway we look at it, it's gonna be heavy.

Keep the greasy side down.

Incidently, I got my figures from the Lubrizol Corp web site.

Keep the greasy side down.

I am inclined to believe your numbers Vs mine. But your post does raise an interesting question? Why is #2 diesel so much heavier than #1?

Because #1 is a 'lighter' product of distillation. #2 consists of heavier components, mainly more paraffin.

Btw, 7.2 lb/gal is the weight normally used for #2.

Thanks for the information. I had kinda figured that I'd have to call the oil company and get it pumped out. I need to replace the tank it has a pinhole leak that is patched but I don't trust it to hold (not with 200 gallons of #2 heating oil). The problem is that I want to put the new tank in the same place. I'll have to see what the oil company will do for me, after all I've been buying from them since we moved in.

I've seen/have the Thomas Glover reference...

But...a quick look at Nebraska Tractor Testing in 1992 and 1993 is showing an average gallon of diesel fuel weighs 6.987 lbs./gal.

However, for 1999 and 2000 Nebraska Tractor Labs shows an average gallon of diesel to weigh 7.067 lbs./gal.

And in 1952...an average gallon of gasoline weighed 6.096 lbs./gal. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
