Ok---now that we have 2-3 weeks of somewhat continuious rain, I can hardly walk on the red clay in our yard without leaving indentations. Using the tractor is next to impossible in this clay without tearing it up (lawn area) kinda bad.

I can have a set of near new turf tires and wheels sent to me for $415.00 for my John Deere 4100 (I am making an assumption here that 4115 wheels are the same---if anyone knows different please say so)

For that price is the difference REAL significant or would I be disappointed that it wasn't that noticeable??
Thanks
Dan

Dan,

The conditions of the ground itself will dictate how apparent the difference would be.
When the ground is nice and hard, under normal driving conditions (but watching tight turns, carrying loads in FEL...) the R1's won't dig in so there'll be little difference.
As the ground gets wetter, the difference will be more apparent. The R1's will start to leave indents.
If you can't walk on it without sinking in, I doubt I'd drive anything on it.
If you're taking the tractor into areas off the yard (directly onto clay or something), the turf tires aren't going to like it unless it's nice and dry. They'll cake up and get real slick.

R4's are nice tire for all-around use.

Not sure about 4100 vs. 4115 wheels but the price seems very reasonable to me.

I agree on the value for $415 but I'd sure call my Deere dealer and make certain they'll fit my machine. Just by looking at the two tires I'd think the depth of your ruts might be reduced by 1/3 to 1/2. Remember that you're still going to sink after that much continuous rain. It's only a matter of how deeply.

The R4's are wider than the R1's and should work better. I use them on my 4115 in some soft stuff and they work well. The turf tires have no traction.

You'll need new rims, and make sure to replace both the front and rear tires so the 4WD works properly.

You can put up to 35/40 psi in the R4's but you may want to run them at lower pressures to work in soft stuff.

Turf tires will help with the ruts and work well on"Turf".

In clay, they will cake up and slick over. Might not matter if you don't need the traction for anything, but if its that wet, you will be making ruts with any kind of tires.

I had the opposite problem - I had turfs on and wanted more traction in the wet clay during the cnstruction of my house. Throwing a set of chains on over the turfs was a lot cheaper than a set of new tires and rims.

Now that the house is done, I have taken off the chains and the turfs work fine on the grass. I do avoid going out if its wet, because it will still compact things quite a bit even if you don't notice the ruts. A CUT is just a bit too heavy to ever really be the perfect machine for finishing mowing a "perfect" lawn.

Actually what I am driving on is turf (lawn) not bare clay---kinda like the idea of that much rubber on the ground as compared to the r-1's. Will call the dealer today and verify the wheel size.

I am thinking that the r-1's in snow might be a good option with the weights I found last week that hang on the TPH (4 weights 230 lbs. each I can use 2-3-4 whichever seems right). This should make a lot less shoveling this winter!!!!!
Thanks for the replys
