JD 1070
I'm kinda new to the tractor scene. I just bought a JD 1070 tractor that is rated at 35 PTO HP. In looking at brush hogs I noticed both of the 6' models had the heavier class 2 3PH pins and the 5' units had the class 1 sized pins. Is a 6' unit too big for my tractor or can I convert the 6' model to class 1 to fit my tractor?

Are both the mowers you are looking at MX models. You should be able to pull the MX6 and I would be surprised if it had Cat 2 pins. I am no JD expert. I am pulling a MX5 with a 25hp PTO very little problems.

In most cases you can convert the Cat II to Cat I by replacing the lift pins. Depending on the hook-up, there might be some slop in the top link hole. If a cutter has Cat II pins I would venture to say it is too heavy for your tractor. It will take so much weight off your front tires it will not steer effectively when lifted with the hitch.

The size cutter you use depends partly on what you are going to cut. You can cut a full swath of lighter grass, but would have to take a more narrow swath if it gets too tough. Also consider the track width of your tractor. If the cutter is much wider than your wheel you will be bumping in trees, posts, etc.
