Greetings all: Basic question from a beginner in this field. What is the difference between Hy-tran fluid/oil and 303 oil/fluid. Recently, I purchased a used Deutz 6806 and am learning about the joys of hydraulics and power steering on tractors, (my old tractor is a Case model "D" which has no such devices attached). I've read articles and visited various websites, but am still somewhat confused as to the difference between the two, (other than price). Are the fluids so radically different they cannot be mixed? It seems from what I've read that the 303 is sensitive to temperature and is not to be used below 32 degrees F. I live in central Florida, where the temp rarely falls below 32, so could I use the 303 rather than the hy-trans fluid? Forgive me if these questions seem rather basic, but like I say, I'm a babe in the woods in regards to hydraulics. I should throw into the mix that this tractor (the Deutz 6806) has a power steering unit that is powered by the fluid from the transmission. While this might be very common, I've never seen it or worked with it, but I'm learning. Thanks in advance for your wisdom and guidance - Glenn.

I don't have the owners manual. I've even contacted Deutz in Germany who told me to contact my local dealer, problem however, I don't have a local dealer. "Ach du lieber!" I did find an old Nebraska Tractor Test, (dated January 1976) on line which told me this tractor has a dry clutch - would that make a difference with the fluid?

Can't help much. Nebraska advised 90 weight for transmission in a 1976 article. Seems heavy to me. They offer a synthetic 70-90 now. If going with gear oil I would probably use that. More research is needed before making the change. http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2590&context=tractormuseumlit

Did find this advising the unit has two filters that need to be cleaned periodically.

After you have cleaned the filter under the seat, you need to clean the filter inside the 3-point unit. Sitting on the tractor, it will be by your left foot where the suction line is. It's more like a screen.
