What are the main differences between the John Deere 5D and 5E?

Also, what is the narrowest outside width you can set one of these tractors up at? I looked at the specs on JD's site and it lists the rear axle at around 57" flange to flange but I was curious as to the narrowest outside width with the tires mounted at their narrowest setting.

Can't really say on the width. But the difference between the D and E can really be seen looking at the specs in the PDF file.

What I see in the E over the D is...

*45E and 55E are only MFWD, the 45D and 55D are only 2 wheel drive, so if you want to go smaller HP 2 wheel then you are stuck with the D (bigger Es can be had in either.

*Better std trans
*On-the-Go Shifting-Partial
*Bigger fuel tank
*More steering pump flow
*More implement flow
*Std Mid SCVs, (std on 45 and 55 E only, bigger HPs are an option)
*300lbs more lifting power at the 3-point
*More tractor weight (comparing the 45s and 55s, because the 45E and 55E are MFWD)

Really kind of confusing to try and point it all out, that PDF file will help you out more then I can.

Here is the link to the specs PDF... Well the on line Brochure that can be saved as a PDF 5D, 5E, 5E Limited Series - Product Catalog

Thanks, I was looking over the specs earlier but wasn't sure if I was missing something. Are the 5D tractors made at a different plant or more of a pure economy tractor compared to the 5E? If so I was curious as to the reliability of the D vs E beyond the engine.

The E would most likely be a better option for me but I am looking for a very simple, 2wd tractor to use in the vineyard to run a rotary cutter and mid-mount post pounder. So it doesn't have to be fancy, just reliable and it also has to be no more then 68" max outside width. I would prefer 60-64" but am very limited in that range. I'm either stuck with a compact utility tractor (which I am trying to stay away from) or a narrow fruit/vineyard tractor (which I have no problem with but they cost a lot more for the same basic tractor because of how their reconfigured).

I'm planning to buy a narrow Kubota vineyard tractor for spraying but would like a dedicated tractor for fixing posts and cutting so thats why I am looking more towards basic, bare bones utility tractors.

Thank you for your reply though, it was helpful and I appreciate you taking the time.

No problem... I educated myself on the tractor looking at the specs. Can't help any farther, like if both are made in the same place and so on. I'm sure sooner or later others will pop in and I will be looking as well to see what is going on between the 2. Looking for a new tractor myself and the 5D/E was on the list if buying new.

E has a heavier drivetrain and 9F/3R. It is similar to the base model 25 series. The D has a lighter drivetrain and is 8F/4R. It is similar to the old 05 series. Both are made in India. Both are pretty reliable.

One other subtle difference is that the D series has mechanical wet disc brakes vs the hydraulic wet disc brakes on the E series. Obviously the hydraulic actuated brakes will be easier to use and give a bit more stopping power.

Also, the narrowest they go (with 13.6-28 tires) is 69.4".

Thanks, unfortunately these tractors won't work for me in this application. If I ever need a straight utility tractor for field work again though... :)

Look at the 5EN series, you can get them down to 48" by turning the wheels around:

I know all about the John Deere narrows. I spent a lot of time in a 5510N on a friends farm during harvest the last 4 years. I was looking for a more affordable, general purpose tractor that would work in the vineyard and hay field. I was keying more towards a Compact Utility tractor but if I could find a full utility that would work then I would have been happy. As I am sure you know, you pay a lot more for the narrow versions then you do for the standards. I am small enough still to have trouble justifying one narrow vineyard tractor for spraying so having two narrows just doesn't add up yet. A good multipurpose tractor though is easier to justify as it can be used haying, planting, in the vineyard and general maintenace around the farms. Thanks for the suggestion though, some day I hope to be able to justify a second narrow vineyard tractor.
