Tractor
1998 NH 1725
I was so excitied when I found a tractor that was exactly what I wanted, I over looked something. The tractor does not have a differential lock (I can't find it). I have a 1998 NH 1725 2wd. Is this something that can be added? Or, would it require a whole different rear end?

I'm not familiar with the 1725, so don't even know whether it's supposed to have a differential lock or not. However, on a tractor without a differential lock, you just have to learn to use the individual brakes to get a similar (not exactly the same) result. In other words, if the left wheel is on solid ground, but the right one is spinning, step on the right brake to transfer power to the left wheel, then ease off as you start to move. It doesn't take a lot of practice to get the hang of it.

No differential lock was one of the few things i did not like about the 1725 i had. With practice, you soon learn to use the brakes like Bird said. You also have to take a lit'l more time to do certain things, like trying to drag a full boxblade load of dirt. I had to learn to drag smaller loads to keep the back tires from busting loose with the 2WD. More time on tractor equals more fun for me. I don't know if the dif lock can be added on.

Thanks for the info. I will try the braking method. I have heard of doing that to steer but not to get the tire you want to pull to pull.

The 25 series of compacts were 'stripped down' models. One of the cost savings was the lack of a diff lock. 30 series compacts had diff lock.

Another question regarding the differential lock. Is it just my short legs, or are all differential locks so darn hard to get to? I have a TC45D, seat is adjusted about halfway back. Differential lock is behind my left heel. Almost impossible for me to get a heel or toe on it when I am seated & using FEL (or anything for that matter). Am to the point of bringing a short rod/piece of wood and using my hand to push it down when needed.

Paul,

There are probably ergonomics involved with the operator but diff locks have historically been placed in an area where they are accessible yet out of the way for normal operation. I have a TC40D and do not have any problem reaching mine but have to admit that have slighly longer than average legs (32" inseam) and do not use the diff lock more than a few times per week.
