JD2320 w/R4 $21,100 w/7.16%off
My 2320 occasionally (about one in three times) won't shift from 4WD low to neutral. I talked to my dealers service manager today and he advised:
Occasionally 4WD will cause a preload to the front wheel bearings that makes it difficult to shift into neutral. There are two fixes:
1. Rock the tractor back and forth (forward/reverse) while shifting.
2. Shift into 2WD

That would be the norm for just about any 4x4 machine.

Same problem with my 4010. When I tested both a 4010 and 2210 before buying the 4010, I don't think that I ever got the 2210 into 4wd. It's a mechanical connection and not sweetly done like our modern multi-speed stick shifts. I remember the old stick shifts on bigger hp engines that were bears to shift. Now, they're all pretty good, although I haven't driven any bigger hp vehicles lately. The one on my 2005 Tacoma is great. Of course, I can shift the 4 speed on my 240D by letting my arm rest on the armrest and just twitching the 4 speed lever with my fingers. It's like a knife through hot butter.

Its because they have straight-cut gears. They just need to be wiggled forward and back a tiny ammount to get the stress off of them.

Mine seems to shift easier if I am going slow, and slightly turn the steering wheel right and left. It seems to help reduce gear binding and allow it to pop right out of gear.

Same problem with my 4720 Hydro. The dealer said it's the norm. Down the rpm's and rock F&B. I still hate it.

I just poke the forward or back pedal, and it drops right in.

If I am going from forward to reverse, I usually shift it into Reverse just before it comes to a complete stop, and it shifts like butter.

One thing I've learned from reading the posts in this forum, is to always park with the transmission in neutral. One guy theorized that the transmission may rust and lock in place. But I think the problem might be as identified in the previous posts in this thread.
Wouldn't it be something if I couldn't move the shift lever into neutral and I couldn't start the machine due to the safety interlock! And of course the machine would be parked well away from the road.

interesting. The kubotas start in gear, though the big one makes you depress the clutch. Is that for all deeres, or just non-hst?

my 2520 needs to be in neutral. Its kinda a pain, maybe I can find that pesky switch. Nah, its actually a good safety item really.
