FYI - For those putting fences or trees in. I bought a 'Work saver' post hole digger. Category 0 for 'light duty' but it sure looks well built. The dealer put a Rhino (different company) 9" bit on it because it's much heavier duty than WorkSavers bit. It has double thinkness flutes (or whatever you call them). The dealer cut and shortened the auger shaft because the BX2200 is a little 'short in the pants'. I dug a bunch of holes in rock hard clay to a depth of 34 inches with the engine just above idle. Went very smoothly. The only problem is you have only about 3 inches of clearance when the 3PH is fully raised, so the bit can drag when moving around.

I have the same post hole digger, but with the Worksaver bit. I have had some trouble breaking through hard-pan areas. Does the Rhino bit handle hard-pan well?

The dealer recommended this bit because its got this nasty looking 4 inch point on it, like a self-tapping screw. He said it digs in much better than bits without it. The ground I was digging in was so hard (no real rain in months) that the dirt coming up was nearly powdered. I think it would work on 'hard pan' (is hard pan just compacted clay?)

Yes, here in the piedmont Carolinas it is very hard clay, especially during drought conditions.
Can you post a picture?
