Digging

It isn't so much matter as model to model but weight to weight. There are different Bobcats. Are you talking Bobcat Brand or it's numerous equivalents? Some of those can run 8000 lbs. Having the digging edge close to the front tires also helps digging I think also. You'd have to weigh the 3010. HP without traction and weight don't make a strong digging combination.

That depends on the type of soil your digging and if there good size rocks, also if your digging in a real tight area the Bobcat would do a better job.
Interesting question..and del seem to be right on target.

But I forgot the real answer! (it has been delayed due to brain being down)

A box scraper on the 3010 will probably dig much better then either loader! You put the scarifiers down to loosen and then dig with the blade. Tractors seem to be able to generate far more force pulling then pushing.

The nice box scrapers roll over so you loosen the hard ground then roll over to the digging blade. A typical box you have to get off and fool with the scarifiers. Just a matter of cost, weight, etc. Some guys also put weight on the box to help it. I've also seen a setup from Landpride where you have a combo, a set of scarifiers on a rail, then the box scraper follows behind it. You loosen lightly and pick up what you've loosened as you go along.

Don, I use both types tractors regularly. While the Bobcat or "Skid Steer" type tractors are incredibly useful for many things, manuverability being just about at the top of the list, some things they don't do so great. As long as everything is flat, they work very well. They don't dig up hill very well. They have an awkward balance that will take some getting acustom to especially while loading a truck with heavy loads. They are easy to get stuck. Moving dirt from one area to another is where they really shine. Quick and fast. To answer your question I would put it like this. A tractor can typically dig better then a Bobcat, this is in part because of the reach and trememdous digging force that can be exerted on the bucket lip because of that reach. They are definitely harder to get stuck, Bobcats can dig a hole with its wheels fast and with a full load in the bucket find itself unable to move. If all I was doing was moving dirt and had a choice between using either one, the Bobcat would be my choice. If I was digging, working on slopes, working in wet conditions, needed greater reach (like when digging up a broken pipe) it would be a 4WD tractor. Rat...

One of these days I'll scan some photos of my truck. I learned this lesson the hard way! I had a full bucket of dirt on an ever-so-slight downgrade to my truck. Bucket up high, slowing to the side of the truck and BAM... before I could even think about my pants, the bobcat was on the side of my truck bed. Caved the entire bed side in and caught the tailgate as well. I used the bobcat to push it back into position and pounded out the tailgate so it works, but it looks like s**t. I'm sure bobcats have thier place, but I'll stick with tractors for now. Anyone know of deal of a pre-'97 Ford shortbed with dual tanks. Prefer hunter green, with a tailgate /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I agree with Rat and Rob on the stability issue, DEFINITELY. But as far as digging and making roads and stuff the skidsteer is definitely better, IMHO. I can dig faster, level out a space, move dirt or manure, build roads, etc. faster with a skidder. BUT, like said, on any kind of slope, slick surface, etc. it's junk! That was my main reason for buying the jd 4600 and then I was going to sell the skidsteer. But after doing some of the other things the skidder shined at I decided not to sell it and keep it.
