Hi again, What can you tell me about the new tractors and direct to metal paint? I was told that tractors older than 2004 still have primer under the paint, and that it is far more desirable to have primer.

I see many brand new implements sitting on dealer lots, with peeling paint and rust all over where the paint has cracked and peeled.

I also have a 2005 Bobcat that is starting to peel. I will have to get out a paintbrush and scraper and go at it this summer.

That makes me a little nervous about buying a new tractor...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Troy Boyd

We have one 2003, two 2008 models as well as a 2010 and so far after a lot of hard use including brush contact, we can see no difference.

Direct to metal paint is not the primary reason for poor quality/lack of durability.

Although a multi step paint process will produce a more durable finish, the reason for poor adhesion is mostly from poor, or incorrect prepping procedures, or incorrect application, which will usually the result of a manufacturer trying to cut costs. Direct to metal coatings are a cost saving product, so they are naturally used in conjunction with other cost cutting procedures, with the finish getting the blame, when it does not adhere.

Occasionally, government regulations forcing changes in products, and procedures, from ones that are know to work, into new "experimental" ones, are to blame for the onset of paint failures.

Direct to metal paint will adhere to properly prepared metal; no finish will adhere well to improperly prepped metal.

The biggest difference between a multi step finish, and a direct to metal finish, is corrosion protection. the multi step finish usually provides a better barrier from moisture penetration, if moisture cannot get to the metal, it generally cannot corrode.

The scraper will remove the loose stuff but you need to prep the surface using your 4-1/2" angle grinder and a wire brush wheel followed by mineral spirits to get it really clean and ready for the paint.

My 2010 Kubota L3400 has a rather thick white primer under all of that pretty orange paint, I know because of all the rocks I have skinned up the bucket with:laughing:
