Anybody on DirectWay ( DirectTV ) sat. internet. What kind of speeds can I expect. I can't seem to find any technical details on the web sites. I know the speeds vary, but an average ???

I can only get to 44 k on my dialup on a good day !!

Any news or thoughts would be appreciated.

Although I do not have a sattelite internet connection, I think that you will probably like the speed increase over a modem. You might want to consider though if anyone gives you numbers as to the speed, to also consider that one number often left out of discussions about Internet access speeds is latency. Latency is the amoung of time necessary to establish the connection to a site, and often varies widely among connection methods. Sattelite by nature has a very high latency (meaning slow), and so you will not likely experience a huge difference in the speed of general web browsing, but for large file downloads, you will certainly notice. The difference here is that in a large file download, the amount of time to establish the connection is small relative to the total time of the download, so it makes little difference, but for small downloads(like when web browsing), the latency makes up a large percentage of the total download time, and therefore a low latency "slow connection" will often outperform a high latency "fast connection". I hope that I have not confused this issue too much, but I guess my point is to make sure that you understand that one 56Kbps connection is not always the same as another 56Kbps connection. Good luck...

rf33, Thanks for the lesson...I had a bit of an idea of what latency was, but I never had I explained in such simple terms. The big file downloads is my problem now. I receive large email attachements ( ACAD .dwg files ) and need to be able to download current equipment catalog data on a regular basis. I'm not really a surfer, but would enjoy downloading in minutes instead of hours !!

Anyone else ??

Here is a recent thread on the subject.

No Problem, with your large file attachment downloads, the latency should be less of a concern than the throughput. I think that the sattelite solution definitely makes sense for you. For my business (stock trading software), latency makes all the difference since I receive sometimes thousands of packets per second and so I had to go with a T1 to my house to get the proper combination of throughput and latency. Sure is a nice way to surf the net, but a little hard on the wallet.

You may want to look at this link regarding Direct Tv's discontinuance of thier Direcway service. Hughes Satellite seems to still be offering service, so it may be that Directway continues to be viable and DirectTV DSL is kaput. One word of warning on the conumer satellite DSL services - they tend to vary a great deal in response times due to traffic. I have a client that uses the business level service (two-way satellite link) and performance is fair (much better then the dial-up but not as quick as DSL)

Try looking on http://www.dslreports.com they have all kinds of info on internet service providers. You may also want to look into getting DSL if its in your area. this site will check and tell you all the providers that supply your area. I have had dsl for over one year with no problems and no slow downs. it used to take 15 minutes to down load a song off the internet. with my dsl connection it takes 30 seconds.

DSLreports is a very good site for finding out about satellite througput, and other issues. Another good one is Copperhead

DirecTV is discontinuing their DSL service, not their satellite (DirectWay) service. They have a lock on that. The DSL is too competitive for them.

Andy,

The link you posted seems to be related to DirecTV Broadband and NOT Direcway. Direcway seems to be very much alive - they are busily promoting it on DirecTV.

I stand corrected /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif. Too much running around the last few weeks to check things out in as much depth as I could.
