Long time listener, First time caller...
I have had my 4010 Cut for 2 weeks, and have put 30 hours on it. The manual calls for the first Oil Change at 50 hrs. At 25 hours I noticed the oil was just starting to show signs it was getting dirty (discolored). At 30 hours it is dirty...I bought oil and a filter last night and won't run it until I change it. The Air filter and housing are both clean.
My question is...How long should the oil last before it gets dirty? I realize it will depend to some extent on the environment in which it is operating, and that this is only the break-in oil. I have used it to move dirt, pull a one bottom plow, and a 50" tiller. Sure, this is a "dirty" environment, but if the normal oil change is every 200 hours and it is dirty at 30, am I doing something wrong? I let it warm up at approx. 1/2 throttle (per the manual) until it runs smooth (about 1 minute), then finish the warmup at idle for approx. 4 minutes before using. Could the warmup at idle be causing excessive carbon buildup? It seems to me 1/2 throttle for 5 minutes would cause excessive wear.
For comparison, I have another diesel (350 Case Dozer) that is run in a dirty/dusty environment and the oil doesn't get dirty before I change it (every 200 hours). The warmup procedure is to start and warmup at idle. This has worked well for 20 years. The air filter system on the 4010 appears superior to the Case.
Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated.
Oh yeah, for you new 4010 owners...an error in the operator's manual states to turn the key to the "On" position to preheat the glow plugs. This is incorrect on this model.
To preheat the glowplugs, place range selector in High or Low, then turn key to the "Start" position for 3 seconds and release. Now place range selector in neutral and start the tractor.
