Disabling Posts to Old Topics

This is for the Sysop,

I think it would be a good idea to disable replying to posts after a certain time period, maybe 60 days. We have a user now that likes to dredge up old posts after many months without adding any real value.

Just my 2 cents as this does impact my enjoyment of this site. No offense, just an opinion.

Every once in a while, I'll give an update to one of my projects that I'm working on, and that brings back an old post, so I don't like the idea of locking old threads.

Personally, I've learn to ignore that specific poster. When I see an old thread re-surface after many months or years, I know ahead of time who dredged it up, and I'm right most of the time.

I've found that most of these people who add zero value to the site eventually go away if they are ignored.

I absolutely agree that it's imperative to leave posts open for some time so that updates can be posted. 60 days is too soon, maybe 120 days. Many of the current examples of what is going on have been dredged up from 8/9 months ago.

Surely, though, there is a point when adding to an old thread doesn't add any value - 18 months, 2 years? I'm sure you understand my point and I appreciate the feedback. Just offering suggestions to keep this site one of the best on the net.

How do you folks know that the rest of TBN doesn't feel the same way about your posts? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know there are many that feel that way about lots of my posts, but I do occasionally ask a good question or give a correct answer or provide some interesting refference material.

The general rule of thumb is if you do not enjoy reading a certain user's posts, don't read them. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Once you've clicked on a thread and had a look, you've basically read it. You no longer have an option to "don't read them."

Here's another option: Have a column that shows the "Last Poster" for each thread. Right now the "Poster" column shows the original creator of the thread.

If someone adds no value at all to the site, I'm sure they will eventually go away if they don't receive attention.

Sounds like you're reading threads by selecting each forum? Is that correct?

Here's a much more efficient way to get through posts and it also shows who posted the response. Keeping up with posts on TBN

Just use the option to view all the posts in the last 1,6,12,24 or 48 hours. It shows all responses to all posts and who posted them.

Not just to be able to post an update Andy, but what if a new member comes along and has a question concerning that old post. "How was it resolved?" or "What if you could have done so and so?" The new member may not have been around to contribute his/her advice when the old thread was still active. If they get locked, the most anyone could do is read it and then make a NEW post asking for suggestions on his/her "similar" situation and no one would have the faintest clue as to what they meant.

Yes, that's correct. I looked through my various configuration options and didn't see much. However, thanks to the link to the excellent thread on keeping up with posts, I think my problem is solved!

Wow, now I see how some posters keep up with all the various forums (and post so prolifically).
