Disappointed with local Box store

Just a quick rant. Am I outa line? I bought a 21 horse riding mower from Lowes last year. The motor is a Briggs. They are still selling the exact same mower this year. I changed the oil but not the filter after the break-in period. This year I stopped into the store to pick up a filter for an oil change. I figured if they were selling the mower they would be carrying the filter. Wrong... They told me they could have the filter in 3 days and it would be over 19$. I was fairly polite but did express my disappointment. I mentioned that I shouldn't have to call ahead 3 days before I do an oil change and that 19$ was way too much.

I went down the road to Farm and Fleet and picked one up for under 8$.

I like Farm & Fleet. It seems to be a good store that carries what I need. The closest one is 45 minutes and I have 3 Home Depots with in three miles, but I still go to Farm & Fleet given the time.

You would think that they would have maintenance parts if they sell the product, but that's not always the case as you've found out. At least you found a place to get what you needed and right down the road. I would do all your shopping there from now on for these needs. I personally like to shop "the net" before hand. G

Even $8 sounds high for an oil filter. Do any of the auto parts places carry filters for the small engines? I know the local Napa dealer carries the Wix filter that fits my old Kubota L210. Last time I bought one, it was labelled as a Napa filter, but it was still the Wix made product.

I had the same problem. I actually returned one tractor to Home Depot for a new one because it was smoking real bad. I later found out that because I had about 100 hours on the original air filter in dusty conditions that had caused the mixture to be very rich and consequently started diluting the crankcase oil with gasoline! Do that long enough and the oil level rises enough so that it starts sucking back through the carb through the crankcase breather pipe. When it happened to the 2nd tractor I figured it out. I'm now looking for an hour meter for this little Briggs!

I like F&F better than TS that replaced it here in my town.

When F& F moved out Tractor Supply moved into the building F&F had been in.

TS portioned off the Left front corner of the building for their srore.AS a result TS is only 25% as large as the F&F they replaced.

Did that make A difference - sure did TS has no ways near the variety and selection that F&F had.
