I picked up an 8' JD 620 disc harrow and have a few questions.

I read about all the posts I could find on disc harrows, and some have raised a concern about turning with a 3pt dis harrow. My first project is to disc up an oval track to run our dirt bikes in to practice turning. How small can I make the oval without running a risk of damaging the blades or bending the frame?

Also, is it true that it is best to set the front gang one notch more aggressive than the rear? Both of mine are in the least aggressive setting, and have threaded bolts in the holes with nuts on the bottom. They are pretty rusted and look tough to get out. Sprayed some penatrating oil on them tonight and will give them a go tomorrow night. Can I replace the nut/bolt set up with pins, or is the clamping effect of the bolt necessary?

Anyone know any history on the JD 620 disc harrow?

Thanks.

If you have a 3pt disc, you can lift it slightly at the end of the row, and then turn as sharp as you want... IE.. stomp one steering brake and near pivot on a rear tire, and then head right back down beside the last cut.

I like to run my front gang agressive, and then my rear gang less agressive so it 'dresses' out the first cut a bit.

Every disc owners manual I've ever read SUGGESTS a starting point with the rear gang set one notch less aggressive on the rear gang. From there' it's simply a matter of adjusting to get the best results. On my Massey Ferguson #25 (3-point) disc, I USUALLY run the rear gang 2 notches less aggressive to get the best finish.

It's a bad idea to make even the slightest of turns with a 3-point disc still engaged with the ground. Many a disc frame has been destroyed in that manner.
