Disc Mfg\'s ???

In the process of looking at 3ph set of lift discs, I have found there are many mfg's and discs out there. I am looking at set of 24X20, appx 8ft wide. Not sure if I need HD or not since I will use maybe 2-4 times year to disc garden area, oversead pasture, etc. and also HD units almost twice as much.

Anyone have any experience with the Howse or Leinbach line of discs? Or, maybe recommend others along same line.

Will I end up paying more to repair or replace cheaper units over a certain period of time?

I haven't had much luck on locating used sets either as most of these are pull behinds.

Thanks

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

I have a Howse. It is about 6- 7 ft. If I was to do it again I would go with a heavier disc. It has been a good disc, I just keep using it for things it was not designed for. I am considering a Monroe tuffline where the back gang folds over the front for more downforce weight.

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

You've got a pretty decent mfg on your doorstep. Check out JBar Corp , Trion, GA. Probably get it cheaper than $800 I gave, by picking it up there. I bought their HD 6 6'' /22" notched, sealed bearing ,and it's heavy enough( 850lbs I think) I don't add weight except for chopping roots and sticks on reclaimed land . Just go over it and crank on axle nuts before you use it. I had one gang come apart and bent axle. I give it pretty hard use and that's my only beef.

I've got the 8' Leinbaugh unit with a tube steel frame. Absolutely no complaints.

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

I got an 8 foot tufline disc.

Fairly rugged peice of equipment and does a pretty decent job.

If it were me, I'd get one that has 9" spacing on the front gangs for deeper cuts, and 7.5" on the back for more better finishing action.

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

Do not get a 3pt disc for your TN. They are useless and you can easily handle a 12' transport disc. If you are looking for new Monroe Tuffline has some very good transport disc in the 10' range also. Or look for an old International as they are very good disc and are easy to get parts for. The transport disc have more weight and will do a much better job. A 3pt disc will bounce around on the ground.

Now there will be people who say my 3pt disc works fine for me and that may be true but a 3pt disc will not work as well as a transport and you can buy a very good used transport disc for $800-$1500 around here in the 10-12 foot range.

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

I think Robert is right, pull type transport disc's do a better job for the most part however for a gardne you might be better off with a tiller. A disc is meant to be used at a constant speed whichis usually pretty fast. A tiller will chop the dirt up better at low speeds better than a dis will. If you are looking for a dis though I would check out the land pride series, I am not familiar with the brands you mentioned but i have glances at the LandPrides and they look like they are veryheavy.

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

Thanks for the advice. I know I can handle something larger and had considered the transport discs, but reason I was considering lift discs is because of portability and limited 'real' agri work.

Why do you say the 3PH lift disc is "useless"?

Re: Disc Mfg\'s ???

A 3pt disc is light by its nature. I have used them and the problem is they bounce. Everytime the disc bounces it does not do anything while out of the ground. A transport disc stays in the ground all the time unless you raise it because it has more weight from the robust framework (and you can add a lot more if you want to). I have never had a problem transporting any of my discs nor can I see a situation where it will be a problem. If all your work is gardens then get a tiller. If you plan on doing any amount then look at a good heavy disc. If you know someone with a 3pt and a transport see if you can try them both out and look at the difference. You have to really try them to understand the difference. I have a 5' 3pt disc that gets used very little and a 6' pull behind non transport that gets used very little as well. I use my 10 and 12' discs for almost all my work as well as a 5' transport for behind the 1920 inside our pens from time to time.
