Disc Mower, NH616 or JD260

Hello,

Never owned a disc mower before, always used a swather or sickle bar. From what I gather disc mower is the way to go for my needs, the question is which one?

Looking at a New Holland 616 and John Deere 260 both going for $4,500 at local dealers. Plan to pull it with our Ford 5610 that makes about 62 PTO HP.

Any thoughts?

i prefer the 616 nh over any other brand. I run a 616 mainly because its a modular bar design so if one section breaks you dont have to tear into the whole bar and if in a real bined you can just remove that section and keep kutting. The 616 is about twince the wieght of the jd. And you 5610 will pull it i pull mine with a 5900.

And from the pictures you showed the nh is in better shape than the jd

Just my opinion, but I would pass on both of those. I think you should be able to buy a newer mower, in better condition, for that kind of money. (or a comparable condition mower for less)

For example, about 4 years ago, I bought a JD 265 for $2500. The 265 is a Kuhn GMD600 with a green paint job, (great mower) and it's a newer machine than the 260.

Thanks for the info guys! I would tend to go NH too but that's what I know and the parts are closer. Wish I could find a mower (JD or NH) here on the west coast in decent shape for around $2500, seems like the ones I've looked at to date in that price range are basket cases. Round balers and disk mowers don't seem as popular here for some reason.

I now have a better idea what to look for at least, thanks again.

the 616's just quit production about 2years ago they still make them but under a new model number and a new one cost about 12000 the 616 for 4500 is cheap they bring more than that at auction

but i agree the 260 is basicly a 462 nh or a kuhn 66 which hasn't been made in the last 15 or so years
