Disc mower - whats with the cone on the far/end disc

Hi, have just got a 4 disc Vicon for the tractor (need to replace a collapsed bearing first). Why is there a cone/hat on the end/far disc - what's it's purpose / can I run without it (bit rusted).

It kicks the cut hay inboard, helping leave a clean line between cut and uncut grass. I tried to use a cutter once without it and you would get globs of hay building up on the swath board.
