disc or chisel plow size?

I have a Grand L3240 and I want to till up some old pasture land to kill off the over grown canary grass and eventually return it to native prairie grass. I do not have rear remotes, so I'd prefer to stick with a 3pt mount.

What size the biggest or best size of disc and/or chisel plow can I use?

I do plan to first burn off the existing grass, plow the pasture with a 2 bottom plow, and then disc or chisel plow. After that I'll probably need to spray and disc a few more times before I actually try planting seed.

I suppose this depends a lot on the type of tires that you have. If you have R-1 ag type tires, you should have adequate traction for a 5-6 foot light to medium weight disc in the 4-600 pound weight range. This also depends on soil conditions. Heavier soils like clay and clay loam will require more power to pull thru. Your local tractor dealer should be knowledgeable of the local soil conditions to advise you on this. The following is from an LSU agriculture paper for tillage equipment and HP requirements.
D. Drawbar horsepower requirements:
1. Three point lift models: 20 to 30 pounds of disk per DBHP for 4.0 MPH.
2. Wheel tandem models: 44 to 48 pounds of disk per DBHP at 5.0 MPH.

Since you're going to break the ground with a turning plow, there is no need to consider using a chisel plow. Your tractor isn't big enough to pull a chisel plow anyway. Just plow and disc. That should get you an adequate seed bed.

I have the R4 tires, so my traction will be a little bit hampered. I don't think the soil is super heavy clay, but I haven't investigated it.

I think I need a 6' disk to cover both wheels. The tiller I have is 58" and is 6" short of covering both wheels (I have it off set).

If you pull a double gang 6 ft disk you will do well. If I could I would try to find 6 ft and test it. But as has been pointed out there is a good bit that comes into play. The weight of the disk, the depth you are disk, how soft the soil is (softer takes more HP) level or sloped. kt
