Disc problems

I have a used king cutter ...7 footer....after some work to get the disc to spin..I hooked it up to our Ford 8 1/2 N.....long story short it only went down about 2 inches into the ground...any ideas on what might be going on?

When is the last time it rained?

How thick is the grass?

What is the angle of the gangs?

Maybe your soil is too compacted for the disc to penetrate. A 7' disc should have ample weight. Maybe you should plow then disc.

Ok, you got me. First of all what is and 8 1/2 N? Next are you saying that the disk only penetrated in the ground 2 inches. If so what type of soil do you have, rocky, clay, gravel? Is the ground too dry? Do you have the disks in a straight line or angled? When angled they dig in a little more. Is the ground plowed first or fresh nothing done to it first?

Ok another thing to point out is some 3pt disks just dont work as well as pull behind. I have noticed 3pt ones tend to not penetrate as much and don't level and smooth out the ground as good as a pull behind.

So you need to answer a few more questions and possibly take some pictures to explain your problem.

It's a 8N tractor with a 9N engine...aka 8 1/2 N...the soil is west Texas sand and rock lots of cactus...the disk is at full angle...the dirt has never line worked.

A funny thing about small disks and small tractors is that it can take a very long time for them to actully break throught the soil. I have red clay soil. If the soil is wet, or soft from the rains, it's easy to disk it up. If it's been sitting for decades, it's hot and dry outside, I will have to go over it many times.

I'm just guessing at what happens, but it's happened like this enough times for me that it's what I expect to happen. The soil is compacted and very hard, so my disk just barely scratches it as I pass over the ground. Pass after pass, it's not getting through, just sort of scratching the surface and creating some surface dirt/dust. But then all of a sudden it happens!!!

One pass is just like all the others, but then the magic pass happens and I break through. Then that place that I've broken though now takes the disk all the way down as deep as they will go. Then I work on widening that area by dragging the disk along the edge of the area that I broke through and the dirt that is too hard. It starts to break up allot quicker now that part of it is broken through.

It really is just a game of repetition. Keep doing it enough times and you will break through. Adding more weight might help to some degree, but HP isn't really going to matter one way or anther as long as you have enough to pull it.

I had that problem with some black soil, if it is too dry it just will not penetrate more than like two inches.
My 5' disk is 663lbs also.
