I am looking for a 30 hp tractor like NH TC 30 or JD 790. How large a 2 row disc should I be able to pull and lift with that size tractor??

Are you talking about a disc harrow? If so a good solid five footer would be tops in my opinion.

I would look for a 5 foot vineyard disc as it is well suited for behind small tractors and does a much better job then a 3pt disc.

Is a vineyard disc a tow hehind unit rather and 3-pt??

A vineyard disc is a tow behind transport disc that is 5' wide. It has two gangs set at an offset which does a great job of cutting into soil. It is better then a trailed disc because it is rigid and won't bounce like a trailed disc. 3pt disc are light and don't float like a transport disc. It is kind of hard to explain but I have a 5' vineyard disc, 6' trailed disc and a 5' 3pt disc (along with my 10 and 12' transports). If I need a small disc I will take the vineyard disc. The only time the 3pt disc is handy is if you are in a real tight spot or if you have to transport as you can transport the disc with the tractor on a trailer. Otherwise you have to haul the disc over seperate (but being a transport you just hitch it to your truck and go).

I honestly can't say that I've ever seen a trailed 5' disc...? Probably the smallest I've seen are the old 6.5-7' JD pull-type disc harrows which were mainly intended for use in front of the JD grain drill as a prep tool. These can be pulled with a Ford NAA if the gangs aren't angled too greatly with some decent results, by the way.

For the poster, a general 3-pt 5' disc will do and be the most convenient to use. There are varying brands and weights ranging from absolutely ridiculously too light and flimsy to the super heavy duty requiring no additional weight. Adding weight to a lighter one is no big deal-concrete blocks...metal weights...etc.

I don't see how you can say the general 3pt disc is the most convienient to use. I have found it is much easier to back up and hook up a transport disc then a 3pt implement when using a compact tractor. Unless you have adjustable lower links that is and even then it is much faster to use a vineyard disc which will do a good job and not cost much.

In this area you can find a good vineyard disc in the weeds as most of the grape farms got away from using the disc in the rows. Depending on where he is in PA there are a lot of grape farms in the North West corner of PA that I know of. Maybe more towards the center.

I have a 27hp FarmTrac and it can pull the 6.5' disc from TSC. I used it to prep the ground for a lawn. I put about an extra 700lb of weight on it and it did a good job.
