just restoring ~2acres of old pasture.. no more stumps/rocks. i purchased enough winter rye to get into the ground, but before i plant i need to break up the soil..

recommendations are to use a disc to break up the soil ..

where is the best place to buy one?

any help appreciated.

TSC or your tractor dealer?

I got mine at TSC for about $400, a 6.5 footer. For 2 acres it should be fine. I have done 2-4 acres several times. The only trouble I have had is the big nut on one gang loosened up and I had to tighten it. If you want to go deeper you will need some ballast. Don't expect more than 4" penetration unless you have sand or loose dirt.

I learned a neat trick to get deeper cut with the small tph discs. Shorten the center link so that the front gangs are the only disc in contact with the ground. The added weight of the rears forcing down on the fronts makes all the difference in the world. Come back later and run over the same plot with the disc level to break up clods and smooth down.

Just my 2cents worth.

Auctions or word of mouth. I picked up a John Deere 10' KBA disc for $50 that needed a few repairs. A trip to the Deere dealer and $80 later (yes you can still get parts 50 years later) it's good to go and does an awesome job.

We have a local publication called The Coastal Trader which has a garden/farm classifeds section and often used disks are offered. Many times you can find a good set for a reasonable price. Perhaps you have a similar publication in your area. Small new discs aren't outrageously priced and can be found through most tractor dealers, TSC, and other Agri supply stores. John

Do you need/want to deep disc or just enough to cover the seed. I overseed wheat&rye over bahia by cutting the grass short, spreading the seed and taking 1 pass over the field with the disc set agressive. It is a scalloped disc. This cuts not too deep to kill the permenant grass but covers the seed just enough to get good germiniation.
